Door-to-door auto transport means a carrier picks your car up at the address you give and delivers it to another address, so you never drop it at a terminal. Every price on Transportli is a door-to-door price. We do not sell terminal-to-terminal shipping, so the quotes in our calculator and the 570 real lanes behind it all assume pickup and delivery at your door, or as close as a big truck can safely get. This guide explains what “door-to-door” does and does not promise, what to do when a truck cannot reach your street, and what it costs.
What door-to-door car transport means
The carrier loads your car at or near the pickup address and unloads it at or near the delivery address. You do not drive to a lot, wait in a yard or pay to store the car in between, and the car goes from one place to the other on the same truck.
| What you can expect | What it does not guarantee | |
|---|---|---|
| Pickup | The driver comes to the address you give, within the pickup window. | An exact hour. Carriers work in windows because they are picking up several cars on one route. |
| Delivery | The driver delivers to the delivery address you give. | A spot right at the door. Big trucks cannot always enter every street. |
| Cost | Every price on this site is a door-to-door price, including the 570 lanes in our data. | Changes after booking. A different address can change the route and the price. |
| Handoff | You or someone you name inspects the car and signs the bill of lading at each end. | A driver waiting around. If nobody is there, the delivery can be delayed. |
The prices on this page are a baseline for your trip. Your own quote sets the final price, based on the car, the two addresses, the trailer and the pickup window.
When a truck cannot reach your door
Most auto transport trucks are large. Many carry up to about 10 cars and are long, tall and heavy, which is why a driver sometimes asks to meet you somewhere nearby. This is normal, not a failure of door-to-door service. The usual reasons are:
- Narrow streets and cul-de-sacs where a long truck cannot turn around.
- Low branches, wires and bridges that a tall load cannot clear.
- Steep, soft or gravel driveways that a heavy truck could damage or get stuck on.
- Gated communities, HOAs and apartment complexes that bar large trucks or require a permit or a guard to let one in.
- City streets where there is no safe or legal place to stop and load, and some restrict trucks.
- Military bases and some campuses, where large commercial vehicles are often limited at the gate.
When this happens, the standard fix is to meet the driver at a large, open lot nearby, such as a big-box store or shopping center, or the end of the road. Ask the carrier what it wants and whether you can drop the car off nearby, and tell the carrier about any limits when you book, because it can send a driver and a truck that fits your area.
Tell us about access when you quote
Mention a narrow street, a gate, a steep driveway or a restricted area in the quote. It helps the carrier plan the right truck and a nearby meeting spot, so the pickup is not stuck on the day.
Door-to-door vs. terminal-to-terminal
Terminal-to-terminal shipping means you drive the car to a storage lot run by the carrier, and pick it up at another lot near your destination. Some companies offer it as an alternative to door-to-door. The car may sit in the lot for days, you pay for the drive at both ends and storage fees can apply. We do not offer it. Every price you see here, and every lane in our data, is door-to-door. Compare quotes for the same service, because a terminal-to-terminal price and a door-to-door price are not comparable.
How much does door-to-door auto transport cost?
There is no separate price for the door-to-door part, because it is how our prices are quoted. What changes the price is the distance, the vehicle, the trailer and the route. On 570 real lanes in 21 states, an open-trailer sedan that runs cost a median of $282 for a trip under 250 miles, $712 for 500 to 1,000 miles and $1,372 for 2,000 miles or more. The price per mile falls from $2.12 on short trips to $0.56 on cross-country ones.
| Distance | Sedan | SUV | Pickup | Van | Sedan price per mile | Lanes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 250 miles | $282 | $293 | $330 | $350 | $2.12 a mile | 124 |
| 250 to 500 miles | $445 | $466 | $657 | $602 | $1.20 a mile | 81 |
| 500 to 1,000 miles | $712 | $772 | $1,062 | $1,049 | $1.00 a mile | 151 |
| 1,000 to 1,500 miles | $942 | $1,035 | $1,522 | $1,518 | $0.76 a mile | 106 |
| 1,500 to 2,000 miles | $1,120 | $1,236 | $1,982 | $2,053 | $0.66 a mile | 40 |
| 2,000 miles or more | $1,372 | $1,510 | $2,399 | $2,496 | $0.56 a mile | 66 |
These are medians of real, door-to-door prices for a running vehicle on an open trailer. An enclosed trailer, an inoperable car and a rural address can each add to the price. See our car shipping cost guide for the full breakdown, and the open vs. enclosed guide for the trailer choice.

What real door-to-door pickups and deliveries look like
These are the drivers’ own photos from real jobs on our platform, taken at pickup and at delivery. They show how it works in practice: sometimes the car is picked up in a driveway or a parking lot, and delivered to a driveway or a residential street. Customer names, addresses, VINs and plates are left out, and the photos are blurred where needed.
Across these five jobs the car was picked up in a parking lot three times and from a driveway twice, and it was delivered to a driveway twice, a street twice and a lot once. The photos do not say whether the driver and customer agreed to meet at a spot nearby, so treat them as examples of the kinds of places cars are picked up and delivered, not as a promise about your address.
How to prepare for a door-to-door pickup and delivery
- Check the access. Look at the street, the driveway, the gate and the overhead clearance for a long, tall truck. If in doubt, plan to meet at a large lot nearby.
- Tell us about any limits when you quote, such as a gated community, an HOA rule, a low bridge or a narrow street, so the carrier can plan for them.
- Give a reachable phone number. The driver usually calls ahead to confirm the time, so keep the phone on.
- Decide who will be there. You or someone you name must inspect the car and sign the bill of lading at each end. Tell the carrier who that person is.
- Clear the space. Move parked cars and anything else that blocks the street or driveway, and know where the driver can safely stop.
- Prepare the car. Leave about a quarter tank of fuel, remove loose items and toll tags, and take dated photos of every panel, the wheels and the odometer.
- Inspect at delivery. Compare the car with the bill of lading before you sign, in daylight if you can, and note any damage on the bill before the driver leaves.
Is door-to-door available to Hawaii, Alaska and rural areas?
Rural addresses are usually available, but a remote pickup or delivery can take longer to schedule and can cost more, because the driver has to leave the main route. Hawaii and Alaska are different. The car travels by ship for part of the trip, so it goes port to port, and a truck handles the land leg at either end. Our Hawaii and Alaska guides show the port costs and the truck leg.
How to choose a door-to-door auto transport company
- Check the company. Every interstate carrier or broker needs a USDOT number and operating authority. Look them up on the FMCSA company snapshot.
- Ask for the service in writing. Confirm that the quote is for door-to-door pickup and delivery, and what happens if the truck cannot reach your address.
- Compare like for like. Check the trailer type, the pickup window and the insurance, not only the price.
- Ask who the carrier is. Find out whether you are dealing with a broker or a carrier, and who is responsible if the car is damaged.
- Be wary of a price far below the others. It may not find a driver, which leaves your pickup stuck or leads to a re-quote.
Transportli is a freight marketplace, not a carrier. You describe the car and the two addresses, and we match the job with carriers on our platform that have been checked for active operating authority, insurance and safety rating.
Door-to-door auto transport: frequently asked questions
What does door-to-door auto transport mean?
A carrier picks up your car at the address you give and delivers it to another address, so you do not drive it to a terminal. If a big truck cannot reach the exact address, the driver and you usually agree on a safe spot nearby.
Does door-to-door car transport cost extra?
Not on Transportli. Every price on our site, including the 570 real lanes in our data, is a door-to-door price, so there is nothing to add for it. The price still depends on the distance, the vehicle, the trailer and the pickup window.
Do you offer terminal-to-terminal shipping?
No. We only offer door-to-door service, so every quote you see is for pickup and delivery at your addresses.
Will the truck come to my house?
Usually the driver comes to your street or driveway if the truck can reach it safely. Narrow streets, low branches, steep driveways and gated areas can stop a large truck, and then the driver may ask to meet you at a large lot nearby.
What if the truck cannot fit down my street?
Tell the carrier when you book, and meet the driver at a large, open lot nearby, such as a shopping center. Ask the carrier for its preferred spot and time.
Do I have to be there for pickup and delivery?
You, or someone you trust, should be there to inspect the car with the driver and sign the bill of lading at both ends. Tell the carrier who that person is.
Is door-to-door service available in rural areas?
Usually yes, but a remote address can take longer to schedule and can cost more, because the driver has to leave the main route. Say where you are when you quote.
How long does door-to-door transport take?
It depends on the distance and the route. Trips under about 500 miles often take a day or two, and cross-country trips are typically about a week. Pickup happens within a window, not at a fixed hour. These are typical, not guaranteed.
Is door-to-door shipping available for an enclosed trailer?
Yes, the service is the same, but an enclosed truck is often longer and lower, so check whether it can reach the address. Enclosed costs more than open. See our open vs. enclosed guide.
Can an inoperable car be picked up door-to-door?
Yes, but tell us the car does not run, because the driver needs a winch to load it, and it can cost more. In our quotes an inoperable sedan added a median of about $190 on the lanes we tested.
Can I change the pickup or delivery address after I book?
Tell the carrier as soon as possible. A different address can change the route and the price, and the driver needs time to plan for it.
Is door-to-door the same to Hawaii or Alaska?
Partly. A truck handles the land legs at each end, but the car goes by ship from port to port in between. See our Hawaii and Alaska guides for the ocean rates.
How do I get a door-to-door car shipping quote?
Enter the two ZIP codes in the calculator on this page for an estimate, or request a quote with the car, the two addresses and your pickup window and compare offers from vetted carriers. It is free and needs no account.
