Looking for auto transport in Mississippi? What car shipping in Mississippi costs depends on the route, the vehicle and whether it runs. We ran real quotes from our platform for thirty-two Mississippi lanes, from a 90-mile hop between Hattiesburg and Jackson to a 1,844-mile haul between Jackson and Los Angeles, and an open-trailer sedan ranged from $164 to $1,555. Here is what Mississippi auto transport costs by vehicle type and route, including auto transport in Jackson and from the Gulf Coast, car shipping from Mississippi to Texas, Florida and New York, how the price changes by direction, how hurricane season and the college calendar change the picture, and the title, registration and insurance rules if you are moving here. Every price is door to door, and you can read how that works in our door-to-door auto transport guide.

Distances are the road miles in each quote, and prices are in dollars. The price per mile falls fast as the trip gets longer, from $2.58 a mile on Hattiesburg → Jackson to $0.51 on Jackson → Miami. Pickups cost a median of 38% more than a sedan on these lanes and vans a median of 36% more, while an SUV was priced below the sedan on 9 of 32 lanes. Treat these as a guide, and get a live quote for your exact pickup and delivery points.

How the price per mile changes with distance

Distance is the biggest driver, but the price per mile falls as the trip gets longer. For a sedan it ran $0.91–$2.58 per mile under 450 miles and $0.70–$1.53 per mile at 1,000 miles or more. A short run costs more per mile because the driver still has to load, unload and reposition the truck whether the trip is 90 miles or 1,000. Hattiesburg to Jackson is 90 miles and cost $232, or $2.58 a mile, while Jackson to Los Angeles is about 20 times as far but only 6 times the price.

Pickups and vans cost more than sedans

A pickup cost a median of 38% more than a sedan on the same lane, from 4% less to 93% more, and a van a median of 36% more. An SUV was priced within a median of 4% of the sedan and was cheaper on 9 of 32. Mississippi is truck country, so if you are shipping a pickup, check the pickup column for your route, and dually trucks, lifted vehicles and anything oversized need a quote of their own. Our pickup truck shipping guide has the details.

Mississippi is a long state with a few mid-sized cities. Jackson and the middle of the state are the hub for the quotes above, Gulfport and Biloxi anchor the Gulf Coast, Hattiesburg and the Pine Belt sit in between, and Tupelo, Oxford and the northern counties look toward Memphis, so check our Louisiana, Alabama and Arkansas guides if you live near those lines. A sedan: Jackson to Gulfport was $186 (160 mi); Gulfport to Jackson was $288 (161 mi); Jackson to Hattiesburg was $164 (90 mi); Hattiesburg to Jackson was $232 (90 mi).

A sedan arriving in Jackson cost more than the same trip leaving on 13 of the 16 Jackson corridors: Miami to Jackson 59% higher ($741 vs. $465), Gulfport to Jackson 55% higher ($288 vs. $186), New Orleans to Jackson 52% higher ($340 vs. $224), Nashville to Jackson 47% higher ($765 vs. $519). Leaving Jackson cost more on 1: Jackson to Houston 14% higher ($459 vs. $404). About the same both ways: Birmingham, St. Louis. The price follows how many cars are moving each way on that lane, so if you can ship in either direction, or can drive one way and ship the other, check both.

The two trucks are a reminder that pickups are common freight out of Mississippi, and they cost more than a sedan on the same lane, as the table above shows. The F-550 is a heavy utility truck, and anything oversized, dually or modified needs a quote of its own. If your vehicle does not run, ask for an inoperable quote.

Inoperable and enclosed vehicles: what they add

On our platform an inoperable vehicle adds about 25% to the open-trailer price (a median of about $190 for a sedan in our tests), because the driver needs a winch and extra loading time, and enclosed transport adds about 75%, because enclosed trailers carry fewer cars. For example, a sedan quoted at $450 open from Jackson to Dallas works out to about $788 enclosed, or about $984 if it also does not run. Collector cars, motorcycles and high-value vehicles are usually shipped enclosed, which many owners choose for Gulf Coast storms, humidity and summer heat. See our inoperable vehicle guide and our classic car transport guide for details.

Hurricane season, students, the military and when to ship

A few patterns recur in Mississippi car shipping. These are general industry experience and the state’s own calendar, not our October quote data, so compare a live quote for your date:

  • Hurricane season. The Atlantic season runs from June through November, and Gulf Coast storms can close roads, delay pickups and send owners moving cars inland, so keep your window flexible, and book early if a storm is forecast.
  • Students. Move-in in August and move-out in May matter at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi State in Starkville, the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Jackson State and the other campuses, and many students ship a car to or from out of state.
  • Military and Guard moves. Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Columbus Air Force Base, Naval Air Station Meridian, the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport and Camp Shelby near Hattiesburg bring moves in and out through the year. Ask your carrier how gate access will work and consider meeting the driver outside the gate. Active-duty members can ask about our military discount.
  • Industry. Automakers, shipyards and other plants across the state mean new vehicles, company cars and employees moving in and out, and dealer transfers are a steady source of pickups.
  • Summer heat. Mississippi summers are hot and humid, so many owners of newer or collector cars choose enclosed transport for the trip.
  • Casinos and the Delta. Gulf Coast casinos and the Tunica area near Memphis bring seasonal moves of workers and second cars.

A flexible pickup window of a few days usually gets a faster carrier match, and booking a few weeks ahead matters more when a storm is forecast or when students move in.

Distance, transit time and the main corridors

Mississippi’s traffic runs on a few roads:

  • I-55 runs north–south through the state from Memphis through Jackson and McComb to New Orleans. I-20 is the east–west route through Vicksburg and Jackson toward Birmingham and Atlanta in the east and Dallas in the west.
  • I-59 links Hattiesburg and Meridian with Birmingham, and I-10 runs along the Gulf Coast through Gulfport and Biloxi toward Mobile and New Orleans. I-22 links Tupelo with Birmingham and Memphis.
  • US-49, US-61 and US-82 carry much of the rest of the traffic, through the Delta along the Mississippi River and across the state.
  • Rural roads and small towns. Much of Mississippi is small towns and farm country, with fewer carriers outside the main highways, so a pickup in a rural county may take longer to schedule or need a meeting point on a bigger road.

Typical open-trailer transit is about 1 to 2 days for trips under 400 miles, 2 to 4 days for 500 to 800 miles, 3 to 6 days for 1,000 to 1,300 miles and 6 to 9 days coast to coast. Those are industry-typical ranges rather than guarantees, and the clock starts when a driver picks the car up, not when you book.

Moving to Mississippi: title, registration, inspection and insurance

If you are moving to Mississippi, the car arrives before the paperwork starts. These are the rules we found on Mississippi Department of Revenue (MDOR) pages, county tax collector pages and insurance guides, as search excerpts, so confirm each item with MDOR or your county tax collector before you go:

  • Registration. The MDOR FAQ gives new residents 30 days to register a vehicle after moving, if it has a current registration or plate from the previous state. One third-party site says 7 days, which conflicts with MDOR, so follow MDOR. Vehicles of 10,000 pounds or less are registered at the county tax collector’s office.
  • Title. A county office page lists the out-of-state title, the out-of-state registration, proof of county residency and the old plate as the documents to bring, and says the owner named on the out-of-state title must appear the first time. We did not find an official MDOR title deadline.
  • Inspection and emissions. The sources we found say Mississippi has no statewide emissions test and no routine safety inspection for private passenger cars, after the annual inspection was repealed in 2015, with window tint checks as a separate matter. Some commercial sites disagree, so ask the Department of Public Safety what applies to your car.
  • Insurance. Mississippi is an at-fault state. Insurance guides give the minimum liability limits as $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury and $25,000 for property damage. They say uninsured motorist coverage is not required, though many drivers carry it.
  • Check the numbers. Some of the pages we read look like scraped copies, so confirm the current limits with the Mississippi Insurance Department or your insurer.

Rules and fees change, so confirm each item with MDOR or your county tax collector before you go. The state’s revenue department is at dor.ms.gov.

Jackson, the Gulf Coast, Hattiesburg and north Mississippi

  • Jackson and central Mississippi. Jackson, Ridgeland, Madison, Brandon, Clinton and Pearl on I-55 and I-20 are the largest source of Mississippi car shipping, with state-government, medical and dealer moves.
  • The Gulf Coast. Gulfport, Biloxi, Ocean Springs, Pascagoula and Bay St. Louis sit on I-10 and US-90, with casinos, shipyards and military bases, and storm season shaping the calendar.
  • Hattiesburg and the Pine Belt. Hattiesburg, Laurel and Meridian are on I-59 and US-49, and price against the Jackson and Mobile lanes.
  • North Mississippi. Tupelo, Oxford, Southaven, Olive Branch and Starkville are close to Memphis and Birmingham, and Southaven and Olive Branch are in the Memphis metro.
  • The Delta and the river. Vicksburg, Greenville, Clarksdale and Natchez along US-61 and the Mississippi River have fewer carriers and longer pickups.
  • Relocations and second cars. Mississippi moves people to and from Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida, and many movers ship a second car instead of driving two.

Dealerships and auctions in Mississippi

Dealers and auction yards are some of the most common pickup and delivery points for car carriers, and they are commercial addresses where a full-size trailer can usually reach. There is no single official ranking of Mississippi dealerships, so these are examples drawn from company listings rather than a top-ten list. For the full picture of auction pickups, see our auction and dealer car shipping guide.

Auction yards

  • Jackson area — Copart’s listings show a Jackson yard on South Rankin Industrial Drive, which some sites place in Florence, south of Jackson, and a Grenada yard on Highway 8 in the north. Check Copart’s location finder.
  • Byram — a 2018 trade report says IAA moved its Jackson branch to a larger site in nearby Byram, so confirm the current address.
  • Elsewhere — we could not confirm a Manheim yard in Mississippi, so check its location finder.
  • After storms — Copart and IAA sell salvage vehicles, including cars damaged in storms and floods, that often do not run, so price those as inoperable.

Each yard has its own release and gate-pass rules, so confirm them before the driver arrives. Auction locations change and some entries are years old, so check each company’s own location finder. Dealers shipping cars to out-of-state buyers, and buyers having a car delivered to their Mississippi home, are both common, and the same open, enclosed and inoperable pricing above applies.

How to choose a car shipping company in Mississippi

Searches for auto transport Mississippi and the best car shipping companies in Mississippi find long lists of names, but there is no official ranking, and the right company is the one that is licensed, insured and clear about price. Check these before you book with anyone:

  • Look up the company’s federal registration. Every interstate auto transporter or broker needs a USDOT number and operating authority. You can check them on the FMCSA company snapshot and the FMCSA licensing and insurance search.
  • Know whether you are dealing with a broker or a carrier. A carrier owns the trucks. A broker or marketplace like Transportli matches your car with a vetted carrier on your lane and shows you the price up front.
  • Ask what the quote includes. Our quotes are for one vehicle on an open trailer, and inoperable and enclosed are priced as adjustments, as shown above. Be wary of a price far below the others, because it may not find a driver.
  • Understand the pickup window. Carriers give a window, not an exact time, and a flexible window of a few days usually gets a faster match.
  • Document the car. The bill of lading is the condition report, so take dated photos at pickup and delivery and note any damage before you sign.

Preparing your car for pickup

  1. Wash the car and photograph it from every side, inside and out, with the date on.
  2. Leave about a quarter tank of fuel and check for leaks, since carriers may refuse a car that leaks fluid.
  3. Remove personal items and toll tags. Carriers generally do not insure belongings left in the car, and any toll transponder should come off before pickup.
  4. During hurricane season, watch the forecast and tell the carrier if a storm may delay the pickup, and keep the car where a truck can reach it.
  5. Fold or secure mirrors, antennas and racks and tell the carrier about anything unusual: a lowered car, a lift kit, a roof rack or a car that does not run.
  6. Plan the handoff. A large truck cannot always reach a narrow rural road or a tight street, so be ready to meet the driver at a nearby lot, and make sure someone can inspect and sign the bill of lading at both ends.
