Shipping LTL freight to or from Nevada? Rates depend on your specific route, freight class, and how close your pickup or delivery point is to the nearest LTL terminal. Nevada has about 3.3 million residents, but most of them live in two places, the Las Vegas valley in the south and the Reno-Sparks area in the northwest, with hundreds of miles of desert between them. I-80 runs about 410 miles across the north, I-15 about 124 miles through the southern tip, and US 95, about 647 miles through Nevada, is the long road that links the Las Vegas area to Oregon. Here’s what actually affects your rate.
LTL trucking regulations in Nevada
A standard LTL tractor-trailer within legal size and weight limits does not need an oversize permit in Nevada. Permits and route rules matter for oversize or overweight freight, and Nevada has a few that surprise shippers:
- Legal size limits are in state law. Under the Nevada Revised Statutes, a vehicle may be up to 102 inches wide and 14 feet high, and a tractor pulling a semitrailer of up to 53 feet is a legal combination. A tractor pulling a semitrailer and a trailer is also legal if neither is longer than 28½ feet.
- NDOT issues the oversize permits, and only NDOT. The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) says over-dimensional vehicle permits are issued only by its Carson City office or online, and that no ports of entry or other locations issue them. The original signed permit must be carried, because copies are not accepted, and an application does not guarantee approval.
- The permit thresholds are specific. NDOT requires a permit for a non-divisible load that exceeds 80,000 pounds gross, 8 feet 6 inches wide, 14 feet high, 10 feet of front or rear overhang or 70 feet long. Super loads, such as those over 17 feet wide on two- or three-lane highways, must be requested online at least 10 business days before the move.
- The fees are low. Under the Nevada Administrative Code, a single-trip permit costs $25, an annual multiple-trip permit costs $60 and a replacement for a lost annual permit costs $10, and special research or inspection by engineering staff is billed at cost.
- Other agencies handle the rest. NDOT sends longer combination vehicles (over 70 feet), truck registration and special fuel tax questions to the Department of Motor Vehicles’ Motor Carrier Division, and spring-thaw and weight-restricted-bridge lists are attached to NDOT permits.
Current permit rules and fees are public record:
NDOT over-dimensional vehicle permits → Nevada permit fees (NAC 484D.635) → Nevada size and weight law (NRS 484D) →
What affects your Nevada LTL rate
- Freight class — density, handling, and liability determine your NMFC class, the single biggest factor in your rate. See our freight class guide.
- Distance — Nevada is long and empty between its cities: US 95 runs about 647 miles and US 93 about 527 miles through the state, so a lane from Las Vegas to Reno or from Elko to Las Vegas is a multi-day haul.
- Metro vs. rural — the Las Vegas valley and the Reno-Sparks area are well served by carriers, while central and eastern Nevada typically see fewer terminals and options.
- Terminal proximity — the more carrier terminals near your pickup or delivery point, the more quotes you see, and in rural Nevada the nearest terminal can be 100 miles or more away.
- Accessorials — liftgate, residential, or inside delivery add to the base rate, same as anywhere else, and deliveries to hotels and convention venues in Las Vegas can need appointment or inside-delivery service.

Where freight moves in Nevada
Nevada freight follows its two metro areas and the interstates between them and the rest of the West:
- The Las Vegas valley — Las Vegas, Henderson and North Las Vegas, with an estimated 678,922, 350,039 and 294,034 residents in 2024 according to Census Bureau estimates, along I-15, I-11 and US 95.
- Reno-Sparks & Northern Nevada — Reno at about 281,714 residents and Sparks at about 111,520, along I-80 and US 395, with Carson City, Fernley and the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center nearby.
- Northeastern Nevada — Elko and the I-80 corridor through Winnemucca and Wells, the route to Utah and Idaho.
- Central Nevada — US 50 and US 95 through Fallon, Tonopah and Ely, with few carriers and long delivery windows.
- The California border — I-80 over Donner Summit and I-15 over Cajon Pass connect Nevada’s two metro areas to the Bay Area and Southern California.
Weather and transit reliability
Nevada freight depends on Sierra Nevada passes that sit just across the California line. On Tuesday, February 17, 2026, I-80 over Donner Summit was closed in both directions during the biggest storm of the season, with the California Highway Patrol describing whiteout conditions and unsafe travel, and the road reopened the next morning, February 18, though it stayed icy and snow-covered, according to Powder. That is the main route between Reno and the Bay Area, so a pass closure can add a day to a lane even when Nevada’s own roads are clear. NDOT also publishes spring-thaw and frost-law restrictions that apply to heavy and permitted loads. For LTL shippers the practical advice is simple: during winter storms, build extra transit time into anything that crosses the Sierra, and check Nevada Roads before a tight delivery.

What a real Nevada LTL quote looks like
The screenshot alongside is an actual result from our platform, a 330 lb shipment from Las Vegas, NV to Tallahassee, FL, compared across 47 real carrier options in seconds. We quoted the same two ZIP codes a month earlier for a heavier 550 lb shipment, which makes a useful before-and-after.
- 47 real carrier options compared for this single shipment, 41 of them standard service and 6 guaranteed, not just one broker’s in-house rate.
- $402.31–$504.58 for the five lowest quotes, with transit of 4 to 9 days. AAA Cooper Transportation was lowest at $402.31 on 4-day service, while XPO’s 4-day $500.16 cost $97.85 more for the same transit time.
- 40% less weight, only 4.6% off the lowest quote. On the Friday, September 4 search for 550 lb, AAA Cooper’s 4-day quote was $421.82, just $19.51 above today’s. TForce Freight fell $97.96 to $496.80 and XPO fell $35.13, but STG Logistics’ 9-day quote actually rose $29.09 to $504.58, and the number of options went from 53 to 47.

Major shipping hubs in Nevada
Nevada’s freight moves through two metro areas and a large industrial park:
- Las Vegas & Henderson — the state’s largest market and a distribution and trade-show hub, and Clark County, which includes the valley, has roughly 2.4 million of the state’s residents.
- Reno & Sparks — the main northern hub on I-80, close to California and the Bay Area.
- Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center — a privately owned industrial park of about 107,000 acres in Storey County, east of Reno and south of I-80, where Gigafactory Nevada was built to serve Tesla and Panasonic. See Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center.
- Carson City & Fernley — the state capital at about 58,148 residents, and Fernley, about 25,508 residents, along I-80 and US 50.
- Elko — the northeastern Nevada hub on I-80, about 20,822 residents, serving mining and ranching.
Highway corridors serving Nevada
I-80 (about 410 miles in Nevada) is the main east-west route, from the California line at Reno through Winnemucca and Elko to Utah. I-15 (about 124 miles) runs through the southern tip from Arizona through Las Vegas to California, and I-11 (about 54 miles) links the Las Vegas area to Boulder City. US 95 (about 647 miles) runs the length of western Nevada from the Las Vegas area to Oregon, US 93 (about 527 miles) runs up the eastern side, and US 50 (about 409 miles) crosses central Nevada.

Donner Summit and the Sierra crossings
Most truck freight between northern Nevada and the Bay Area funnels over Donner Summit on I-80, and Southern California freight reaches Las Vegas over the Cajon Pass on I-15. A snow, crash or wildfire closure at either pass can push trucks onto much longer detours. Check Nevada Roads and Caltrans QuickMap before a tight delivery.
What Nevada shippers move
Nevada’s freight is shaped by technology, metals and distribution. The state exported a record $12.7 billion of goods in 2025, the 33rd most of any state and up 46% from 2015, led by $3.9 billion of computer and electronic products, $3.2 billion of primary metals, $1.2 billion of miscellaneous manufactured goods, $745 million of electrical equipment and $468 million of chemicals. Mexico took $1.7 billion, or 13% of the total, followed by Canada and Switzerland at $1.6 billion each, India at $1.5 billion and Taiwan at $621 million, according to the U.S. Trade Representative. Much of this moves in full truckloads, by rail or by air, but the parts, tools, supplies and finished goods around these industries, and the freight that supplies Las Vegas hotels and trade shows, are where LTL fits.
Nevada LTL freight: frequently asked questions
How much does LTL shipping cost to or from Nevada?
It depends on distance, weight, freight class, and how close your pickup or delivery point is to a major metro’s carrier network. Real quotes on our platform for Nevada lanes have ranged from about $0.23 per mile on a 1,200 lb shipment over 2,504 miles from Henderson, Nevada to South New Berlin, New York to $3.16 to $3.40 per mile on a 100 lb shipment over 127 miles from Las Vegas, Nevada to Washington, Utah, so distance alone does not predict the price. Get an instant quote for your exact shipment.
Do oversized LTL shipments need a permit in Nevada?
Yes, for loads over the legal limits. The Nevada Department of Transportation issues over-dimensional vehicle permits only through its Carson City office or online. Under state regulations a single-trip permit costs $25 and an annual multiple-trip permit costs $60. A standard LTL trailer within legal limits does not need one.
When does Nevada require an oversize permit?
NDOT requires a permit for a non-divisible load that exceeds 80,000 pounds gross, 8 feet 6 inches wide, 14 feet high, 10 feet of front or rear overhang or 70 feet long. Super loads must be requested online at least 10 business days before the move.
Who handles truck registration and longer combination vehicles in Nevada?
The Department of Motor Vehicles’ Motor Carrier Division. NDOT refers longer combination vehicles over 70 feet, truck registration and special fuel tax questions there, while NDOT handles the oversize and overweight permits.
How do winter storms affect LTL shipping in Nevada?
On February 17, 2026, I-80 over Donner Summit closed in both directions during the biggest storm of the season and reopened the next morning, though the road stayed icy. Because that pass is the main link between Reno and the Bay Area, build extra transit time into shipments that cross the Sierra in winter and check Nevada Roads before a tight delivery.
What roads connect Nevada’s main cities?
I-80 crosses northern Nevada through Reno, Winnemucca and Elko, I-15 runs through Las Vegas, and US 95 runs the length of the western side from the Las Vegas area to Oregon. US 93 serves the east and US 50 crosses the center of the state.
Why is the Reno area a major freight hub?
It sits on I-80 close to California and the Bay Area, and the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center, a privately owned industrial park of about 107,000 acres in Storey County, hosts large manufacturing and distribution operations, including Gigafactory Nevada.
