Best Car Shipping & Auto Transport Companies of 2026

We checked eight of the most-searched auto transport companies against public FMCSA records and BBB ratings. See how they rank, and how to check any company yourself.

The short answer: of the eight most-searched auto transport companies we checked, AmeriFreight (97/100), Montway Auto Transport (91/100) and Nexus Auto Transport (88/100) rank highest on public FMCSA and BBB records. All eight hold active federal authority, and every one is a broker, not a carrier: they arrange your shipment and an independent driver moves the car.

We scored each company on three things anyone can verify: how long its federal authority has been on record, whether FMCSA has issued revocation notices against it in the last five years, and its BBB rating. We did not score price, speed or delivery quality, because there is no public data that measures them fairly. See exactly how we ranked.

Then check any company yourself with our free company checker, and use our real price ranges from 1,398 lanes to spot a quote that is too good to be true.

Independence. Transportli is a marketplace that matches shippers with independent, vetted carriers. Companies cannot pay to be listed or ranked here, and none of the companies below is owned by Transportli. Data checked November 4, 2026 against FMCSA records on data.transportation.gov and BBB listings on bbb.org.

Check any car shipping company in 30 seconds

Type a USDOT number, an MC number or a company name. We pull the live FMCSA record: status, whether it is a broker or a carrier, the bond on file, when its authority was granted and any revocation notices. Always ask a company for its USDOT or MC number first.

Source: FMCSA open data on data.transportation.gov. Records can lag behind real-world changes, so confirm important details with the company and on FMCSA’s own site. This tool does not rate or recommend any company.

All eight are brokers. Here is what that means

Broker

  • Takes your order, sets the price and posts your car to a network of independent truckers.
  • Needs federal broker authority and a $75,000 surety bond or trust fund on file.
  • Does not own trucks. The driver who picks up your car is usually a different company.
  • Usually offers more routes and faster pickup because many carriers can bid.

Carrier

  • Owns the trucks and employs or contracts the drivers who move your car.
  • Needs motor carrier authority plus liability and cargo insurance.
  • Can be a good fit on a route it runs regularly, but coverage is narrower.
  • If you hire a broker, ask who the carrier will be and request that carrier’s USDOT number and insurance certificate.

Where Transportli fits. Transportli is a marketplace: you compare quotes and the independent carrier performs the shipment. That is why the lists you see online mix brokers and carriers, and why checking the USDOT and MC number matters more than any star rating.

Price check: what car shipping really costs

The companies above all quote differently. To judge any quote, compare it with what real shipments cost. These ranges come from 1,398 real lanes on our platform (open trailer, running sedan).

DistanceMedian sedan priceTypical rangePer mileLanes
Under 250 miles$300$151–$459$2.11259
250 to 500 miles$483$356–$666$1.24285
500 to 1,000 miles$728$509–$983$1.00415
1,000 to 1,500 miles$977$747–$1,254$0.78253
1,500 to 2,000 miles$1,119$946–$1,401$0.6680
2,000 miles or more$1,390$1,186–$1,668$0.56106

The red-flag rule

A quote far below the low end of its distance band is a warning sign, not a bargain: a broker who posts your car too low may struggle to find a driver, and the price often rises later. Quotes well above the band usually include an enclosed trailer, a car that does not run, or a rush pickup. Use our car shipping cost calculator for your exact route.

How to vet any car shipping company

Five checks before you pay

  1. Ask for the USDOT and MC numbers and run them through the checker above.
  2. Confirm whether you are hiring a broker or a carrier, and who the carrier will be.
  3. Get the price in writing, including what is a deposit and what is paid on delivery.
  4. Ask for the carrier’s insurance certificate and the deductible, in writing.
  5. Photograph the car on pickup and delivery and note every mark on the bill of lading.

Red flags

  • No USDOT or MC number, or numbers that do not match the company name.
  • A price far below every other quote on the same route.
  • A large upfront payment before a driver is assigned.
  • Pressure to book today, or a refusal to put terms in writing.
  • FMCSA shows the authority as inactive, revoked or recently reinstated.

How we ranked these companies

We started with the auto transport brands people search for most, then kept eight whose FMCSA record we could match to the company with certainty. Each score is out of 100 and uses only public, dated records.

FactorWeightHow it is scoredSource
Authority tenure35Years since FMCSA first granted operating authority, up to 15 years for full marks.FMCSA authority history
Revocation record35Revocation events in the last five years: none = 35, one = 26, two = 16, three = 8, four or more = 0. This counts involuntary revocation notices and final revocations, each of which was later cured or reinstated for every company listed.FMCSA authority history
BBB rating30A+ = 30, A = 27, A- = 24, B = 18. Counted only when the BBB listing has the same name and state as the FMCSA record. Otherwise the score is rescaled from the other two factors.bbb.org search results

Pass or fail, not scored

To be listed a company must hold active broker authority and have a bond or trust fund on file with FMCSA. All eight do. Because every company has the same $75,000 requirement, it cannot tell them apart, so we do not score it.

What this ranking does not measure

Price, speed, damage rates and customer service. A high score means a long, clean public record, not a guarantee of a good experience. Always get your own quote, read recent reviews and run the checks above.

Data checked November 4, 2026. FMCSA data comes from the Company Census, Carrier, Authority History and Insurance files on data.transportation.gov. A revocation notice usually follows a lapse in a required filing, such as a broker bond; FMCSA records do not state the cause. FMCSA’s open authority-history file is reliably complete only through about October 2025, so a revocation notice after that date may not appear yet; we confirmed each company is active in FMCSA’s current carrier file as of November 3, 2026. BBB letters were read from bbb.org search results on the same date. We are not affiliated with any company listed, and listings are not paid. When we update the data, we change the date at the top of this page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best car shipping company?

Of the eight companies we checked, AmeriFreight scored highest (97 out of 100) on public FMCSA and BBB records, followed by Montway Auto Transport (91) and Nexus Auto Transport (88). Scores reflect how long a company has held federal authority, its revocation history and its BBB rating. They do not measure price or delivery quality, so compare quotes before you book.

Are these auto transport companies brokers or carriers?

All eight hold active FMCSA broker authority and none holds carrier authority. They arrange the shipment and an independent carrier moves the car. That is normal in the industry, but you should ask who the carrier will be and request its USDOT number and insurance certificate.

How do I check if a car shipping company is legitimate?

Ask for its USDOT and MC numbers and look them up on FMCSA, or use our company checker on this page. Confirm that the authority is active, that the company is registered as a broker or carrier as it claims, and that a bond or insurance filing is on record. Be careful if the numbers are missing or belong to a different company name.

What is an FMCSA revocation notice?

FMCSA issues an involuntary revocation notice when a company with operating authority stops meeting a requirement, most often when its required bond or insurance filing lapses. If the company files a new bond, the revocation can be discontinued or the authority reinstated. A few notices over many years may be paperwork; repeated notices or long gaps without authority deserve questions.

Can companies pay to be ranked on this page?

No. Rankings use only the public records described in our methodology. Transportli is a marketplace and does not own any of the companies listed.

Why are only eight companies listed?

We started with the brands people search for most and included only those where we could match the brand to a single FMCSA record with certainty. Several popular names share their brand with unrelated or inactive registrations, which makes a reliable match impossible without the company confirming its USDOT number.

How much does it cost to ship a car?

In our data from 1,398 real lanes, the median open-trailer sedan price is about $300 for trips under 250 miles, $728 for 500 to 1,000 miles and $1,390 for 2,000 miles or more. Enclosed transport, larger vehicles and cars that do not run cost more. Use the cost calculator for your route.

How long does car shipping take?

Typical open-trailer transit is about 1 to 2 days for trips under 450 miles, 2 to 4 days for 500 to 900 miles, 3 to 6 days for 1,000 to 1,500 miles and 6 to 9 days coast to coast. These are typical ranges, not guarantees, and the clock starts at pickup.

Is my car insured while it is shipped?

The carrier that moves your car is responsible for carrying insurance, and a broker normally does not insure the vehicle itself. Ask for the carrier’s insurance certificate, the coverage amount and the deductible in writing before pickup, and note any existing damage on the bill of lading.

Should I pick the cheapest quote?

Not automatically. A quote far below the typical range for your distance can mean the broker will struggle to find a driver, and the price may rise later. Compare the quote with the ranges in our price check and prefer a company whose USDOT and MC numbers check out.
