Looking for auto transport in Wyoming? What car shipping in Wyoming costs depends on the route, the vehicle and whether it runs. We ran real quotes from our platform for thirty-two Wyoming lanes around Cheyenne, Casper and Sheridan, from a 100-mile hop between Cheyenne and Denver to a 1,108-mile haul between Cheyenne and Los Angeles, and an open-trailer sedan ranged from $145 to $1,193. Here is what Wyoming auto transport costs by vehicle type and route, including car shipping from Wyoming to Colorado, Utah, California, Texas and Montana, how the price changes by direction, how wind and winter closures affect trucks, and the registration, tax and insurance rules if you are moving here. This page is about the state of Wyoming, and our Michigan guide covers Wyoming, Michigan. Every price is door to door, and you can read how that works in our door-to-door auto transport guide.
What it costs to ship a car to or from Wyoming
Whether you need an auto transport service in Wyoming for a move, a second home, a purchase or a dealer transfer, every figure below is a real quote from our platform for one vehicle on an open trailer, running, priced separately for each vehicle type. All lanes were priced on November 2, 2026. Cheyenne stands in for the southeast, the I-25 and I-80 crossroads and the Denver side of the state, Casper for the center and the energy country, and Sheridan for the north, the Bighorns and the Billings, Montana side, and each lane is labeled by its actual cities. Most moves are quoted in both directions, so you can see what changes when the car is arriving in Wyoming or leaving it. Laramie, Gillette, Jackson, Cody, Rock Springs and the small towns are served from the same lanes, with a meeting point when needed.

Distances are the road miles in each quote, and prices are in dollars. The price per mile falls fast as the trip gets longer, from $2.68 a mile on Billings → Sheridan to $0.58 on Cheyenne → Los Angeles. Pickups cost a median of 39% more than a sedan on these lanes and vans a median of 24% more, while an SUV was priced below the sedan on 3 of 32 lanes. Treat these as a guide, and get a live quote for your exact pickup and delivery points. Some vehicle-type quotes looked uneven, such as a van from Sheridan to Minneapolis at $480 against a $757 sedan and a van from Cheyenne to Los Angeles at $1,768 against a $638 sedan, so check the vehicle columns and both directions for your own route.

How the price per mile changes with distance
Distance is the biggest driver, but the price per mile falls as the trip gets longer. For a sedan it ran $0.99–$2.68 per mile under 450 miles and $0.58–$0.93 per mile at 1,000 miles or more. A short run costs more per mile because the driver still has to load, unload and reposition the truck whether the trip is 100 miles or 1,000. Cheyenne to Denver is 100 miles and cost $145, or $1.45 a mile, while Cheyenne to Los Angeles is about 11 times as far but only 4 times the price.
Pickups and vans cost more than sedans
A pickup cost a median of 39% more than a sedan on the same lane, from 4% less to 136% more, and a van a median of 24% more. An SUV was priced within a median of 9% of the sedan and was cheaper on 3 of 32. Wyoming is truck country, with ranch, oilfield and four-wheel-drive vehicles everywhere, so if you are shipping a pickup, check the pickup and van columns for your route, and dually trucks, lifted vehicles and box trucks need a quote of their own. Our pickup truck shipping guide and our study of how much more a pickup, SUV or van costs than a sedan have the details.

Inside Wyoming and across the border
Wyoming is about 360 miles from east to west and about 280 miles from north to south, with long empty stretches between towns, so trips inside the state are served from the same lanes: Laramie, Gillette, Cody, Jackson, Rock Springs, Rawlins and the small towns from Cheyenne, Casper and Sheridan. Our Colorado, Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Utah and Idaho guides cover neighboring lanes.

About the same both ways: Casper and Rapid City, Casper and Billings, Sheridan and Billings, Sheridan and Rapid City. The price follows how many cars are moving each way on that lane, so if you can ship in either direction, or can drive one way and ship the other, check both. Inoperable and enclosed vehicles: what they add
On our platform an inoperable vehicle adds about 25% to the open-trailer price (a median of about $190 for a sedan in our tests), because the driver needs a winch and extra loading time, and enclosed transport adds about 75%, because enclosed trailers carry fewer cars. For example, a sedan quoted at $145 open from Cheyenne to Denver works out to about $254 enclosed, or about $317 if it also does not run. Collector cars, exotics and high-value vehicles are usually shipped enclosed, which many owners choose for winter road salt, gravel and hail. See our inoperable vehicle guide, our classic car transport guide and our exotic and luxury car shipping guide for details.
Energy, military, students, tourism and when to ship
A few patterns recur in Wyoming car shipping. These are general industry experience and the state’s own calendar, not our quote data, so compare a live quote for your date:
- Wyoming to California and the West. “Wyoming to California” is the biggest route search in our keyword data, and Colorado, Utah and Montana are the neighbors most carriers serve first. Our California guide covers the other end.
- Energy and mining. Oil, gas, coal, wind and trona work around Casper, Gillette, Rock Springs and Evanston bring job-related moves, often in work trucks.
- Military. F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne and the Wyoming National Guard bring moves in and out all year. Ask your carrier how gate access will work, and active-duty members can ask about our military discount.
- Students. The University of Wyoming in Laramie, Casper College, Sheridan College and Laramie County Community College bring move-in in August and move-out in May.
- Tourism and second homes. Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Jackson Hole and Cody bring seasonal and second-home moves, and a driver may ask for a meeting point on a main road rather than a ranch or mountain road.
- Colorado Front Range and Denver. Cheyenne is about 100 miles from Denver and 45 miles from Fort Collins, so relocations and dealer moves follow the Front Range.
- Taxes and registration. Wyoming has no state personal income tax, which draws some movers and second-home owners, so confirm with your county treasurer how registration and tax work in your situation.
- Wind and winter. High wind and snow can close I-80, I-25 and I-90 or restrict light, high-profile vehicles, and a loaded car hauler is high-profile, so expect delays and ask your carrier about rerouting. WYDOT’s road report is at wyoroad.info.
A flexible pickup window of a few days usually gets a faster carrier match, and booking a few weeks ahead matters more in winter, at the start of the school year and around holidays.
Distance, transit time and the main corridors
Wyoming’s traffic runs on a few roads:
- I-80 runs east to west across the south through Cheyenne, Laramie, Rawlins and Rock Springs, and I-25 runs north to south from Cheyenne through Casper to Buffalo. They are the two roads most carriers use.
- I-90 crosses the north from Sheridan through Gillette to South Dakota, and US-20, US-26, US-14, US-16 and US-191 serve Casper, Cody, Jackson and the small towns, so a pickup in a small town is often routed to an interstate first.
- Distances inside the state. Wyoming is about 360 miles from east to west, so a trip from Cheyenne to Sheridan or Jackson is a long haul by itself, and the whole state is in the Mountain time zone.
- Wind and winter. Strong wind and snow regularly close or restrict I-80, I-25 and I-90 between Cheyenne, Laramie and Rawlins and across the north, and a storm can delay a truck that is already on the road.
Typical open-trailer transit is about 1 to 2 days for trips under 450 miles, 2 to 4 days for 500 to 900 miles, 3 to 6 days for 1,000 to 1,500 miles and 6 to 9 days coast to coast, and a storm can add a day or more. Those are industry-typical ranges rather than guarantees, and the clock starts when a driver picks the car up, not when you book.
Moving to Wyoming: registration, tax and insurance
If you are moving to Wyoming, the car arrives before the paperwork starts. These are the rules we found in search excerpts, not an official page, so confirm each item with your county treasurer or the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) before you go:
- Registration. Sources say new residents generally have 30 days to register a vehicle, though one says 60 days and another says registration is due immediately, so ask your county treasurer. Registration is handled by the county treasurer, and the first registration usually needs an in-person visit. Official information is at dot.state.wy.us.
- Inspections. Sources say Wyoming has no safety inspection and no emissions test for passenger vehicles, but an out-of-state vehicle needs a VIN inspection when it is first registered.
- Sales and use tax. Sources conflict, and some say new residents pay a one-time tax on a vehicle brought in from out of state, based on its value, with a 4% state rate plus a county rate, and others give different timing and rates, so ask your county treasurer.
- Insurance. Most guides list minimum liability of $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident and $20,000 for property damage, and uninsured motorist coverage must be offered. Confirm with the Wyoming Department of Insurance or your insurer, and most lenders and leases require more.
- Military. Active-duty members stationed in Wyoming but domiciled elsewhere can often keep their home-state registration, so ask your base legal office.
Rules and fees change, so confirm each item with the state or county before you go. Our moving-to-Wyoming tip: ship the car to arrive when you can start the registration, so the deadline does not run out while the car is on a truck.
Cheyenne, Casper, Sheridan and the rest of Wyoming
- Cheyenne and Laramie. Cheyenne, Laramie and Wheatland on I-25 and I-80 have military, government, university and Front Range moves.
- Casper and the center. Casper, Douglas, Glenrock and Riverton on I-25 and US-26 have energy, hospital and relocation moves, and the state has Copart and IAA yards in Casper.
- Sheridan, Gillette and the north. Sheridan, Buffalo and Gillette on I-90 and I-25 have energy, college and ranch moves and are close to Billings.
- Cody, Powell and the northwest. Cody, Powell and Lovell on US-14, US-16 and US-20 have tourism and second-home moves toward Yellowstone.
- Jackson and Teton County. Jackson on US-26 and US-191 has resort, second-home and seasonal moves, with winter conditions and narrow roads that call for a meeting point.
- Rock Springs, Green River and the southwest. Rock Springs, Green River, Rawlins and Evanston on I-80 have mining, energy and trucking moves and are served from the same lanes.
Dealerships and auctions in Wyoming
Dealers and auction yards are some of the most common pickup and delivery points for car carriers, and they are commercial addresses where a full-size trailer can usually reach. There is no single official ranking of Wyoming dealerships, so these are examples drawn from company listings rather than a top-ten list. For the full picture of auction pickups, see our auction and dealer car shipping guide.
Auction yards
- Copart — Copart’s listings show one Wyoming yard, in Casper on Oil Field Center Road, with an online sale each week.
- IAA — directories list an IAA branch in Casper on Salt Creek Highway, with online sales, and we did not find a Cheyenne yard for either company.
- Nearby yards — the closest large auction yards for the southeast are in the Denver area, so check each company’s own location finder.
- Verify first — these listings come from company pages and directories, and some are old, so confirm each on the company’s own location page before the driver arrives.
- After collisions and hail — Copart, IAA and other auctions sell damaged and salvage vehicles that often do not run, so price those as inoperable.
Each yard has its own release and gate-pass rules, so confirm them before the driver arrives. Auction locations change, so check each company’s own location finder. Dealers shipping cars to out-of-state buyers, and buyers having a car delivered to their Wyoming home, are both common, and the same open, enclosed and inoperable pricing above applies.
How to choose a car shipping company in Wyoming
Searches for auto transport companies in Wyoming find long lists of names, but there is no official ranking, and the right company is the one that is clear about price and who does the work. Check these before you book with anyone:
- Look up the company’s federal registration. Every interstate auto transporter or broker needs a USDOT number and operating authority. You can check them on the FMCSA company snapshot and the FMCSA licensing and insurance search.
- Know whether you are dealing with a broker or a carrier. A carrier owns the trucks. A marketplace like Transportli matches your car with a vetted carrier on your lane and shows you the price up front.
- Ask what the quote includes. Our quotes are for one vehicle on an open trailer, and inoperable and enclosed are priced as adjustments, as shown above. Be wary of a price far below the others, because it may not find a driver.
- Understand the pickup window. Carriers give a window, not an exact time, and a flexible window of a few days usually gets a faster match.
- Document the car. The bill of lading is the condition report, so take dated photos at pickup and delivery and note any damage before you sign.
Preparing your car for pickup
- Wash the car and photograph it from every side, inside and out, with the date on.
- Leave about a quarter tank of fuel and check for leaks, since carriers may refuse a car that leaks fluid.
- Remove personal items and toll tags. Carriers generally do not insure belongings left in the car, and any toll transponder should come off before pickup so you are not charged for the truck’s tolls.
- In winter, clear the ice and snow and check the road conditions for your route and keep the car where a truck can reach it, and tell the carrier if a storm may delay the pickup.
- Fold or secure mirrors, antennas and racks and tell the carrier about anything unusual: a lowered car, a lift kit, a roof rack or a car that does not run.
- Plan the handoff. A large truck cannot always reach a gravel driveway or a narrow street, so be ready to meet the driver at a nearby lot, and make sure someone can inspect and sign the bill of lading at both ends.

Typical open-trailer transit is about 1 to 2 days for trips under 450 miles, 2 to 4 days for 500 to 900 miles, 3 to 6 days for 1,000 to 1,500 miles and 6 to 9 days coast to coast. Storms and wind closures can add a day or more. These are typical ranges, not guarantees, and the clock starts at pickup.
Does the direction of the trip change the price?
In our quotes a sedan arriving in Cheyenne, Casper or Sheridan cost more than the same trip leaving on 9 of the 16 corridors, for example Los Angeles to Cheyenne 61% higher ($1,030 vs. $638). If you can ship in either direction, compare both.
Do wind and winter closures delay car shipping in Wyoming?
Yes. High wind and snow regularly close or restrict I-80, I-25 and I-90, and WYDOT restricts light, high-profile vehicles during strong gusts, which can hold a loaded car hauler. Keep your window flexible, ask your carrier about rerouting and check WYDOT’s road report at wyoroad.info.
How much extra does it cost to ship an inoperable car?
On our platform an inoperable vehicle adds about 25% to the open-trailer price (a median of about $190 for a sedan in our tests), because the driver needs a winch and extra loading time. Tell us the car does not run when you request the quote.
How much more is enclosed car shipping?
Enclosed transport adds about 75% over the open-trailer price on our platform. For example, a sedan quoted at $145 open from Cheyenne to Denver works out to about $254 enclosed. Collector and high-value cars are usually shipped enclosed, which many owners choose for winter road salt, gravel and hail.
Can I ship a pickup truck from Wyoming?
Yes. Pickups cost a median of 39% more than a sedan on our lanes and vans a median of 24% more, and heavy-duty trucks and dually trucks need a quote of their own. Our truck shipping guide has the details.
Can you pick up at an auction in Wyoming?
Yes. Carriers pick up and deliver at auction yards, and Copart and IAA list yards in Casper, though each yard has its own release and gate-pass rules and addresses change. Cars that do not run, such as salvage, should be priced as inoperable.
Can I ship a car to or from F.E. Warren Air Force Base?
Yes. Carriers deliver to the Cheyenne area, and gate access varies, so ask the carrier how it works and consider meeting the driver outside the gate. Active-duty members can ask about our military discount.
Can a carrier reach my ranch or mountain address in Wyoming?
Often not all the way. A full-size trailer may not fit a gravel ranch road, a steep mountain road or a narrow town street, so the driver may ask you to meet at a main road or parking lot nearby. Tell us about the road when you request the quote.
How soon do I have to register my car in Wyoming after moving?
Sources say new residents generally have 30 days, though one says 60 days and another says registration is due immediately, and registration is handled by the county treasurer. Confirm with your county treasurer before you go.
Does my car need an inspection or emissions test in Wyoming?
Sources say Wyoming has no safety inspection or emissions test for passenger vehicles, but an out-of-state vehicle needs a VIN inspection when first registered. Confirm with your county treasurer or WYDOT.
Do I pay sales tax when I bring my car to Wyoming?
Sources conflict. Some say a new resident pays a one-time tax on an out-of-state vehicle, based on its value, with a 4% state rate plus a county rate, and others give different timing and rates, so ask your county treasurer.
Do I need auto insurance in Wyoming?
Yes. Most guides list minimum liability of 25/50/20, and uninsured motorist coverage must be offered. Confirm with the Wyoming Department of Insurance or your insurer.
How do I choose an auto transport company in Wyoming?
Find out who does the work and who you pay, ask what the quote includes and what happens if the price changes, and read reviews of the company. Be wary of a price far below the others, because it may not find a driver, and document the car with dated photos at pickup and delivery.
