Registering your car in Colorado after the move

If you are moving to Colorado, the car arrives before the paperwork starts. These are the rules Colorado’s Department of Revenue Division of Motor Vehicles and Division of Insurance publish for vehicles brought in from another state:

  1. Register within 90 days. Colorado gives new residents 90 days after establishing residency to title and register, in person at your county motor vehicle office. Convert the out-of-state title to a Colorado title first.
  2. Bring ID and proof of residency. You need an approved ID, a Colorado Residency Establishment form (DR 2504) and a proof of residency document such as a lease, mortgage statement or utility bill, plus the title and registration fees and any state and local taxes.
  3. Get a VIN verification. Colorado requires a physical VIN check (form DR 2698) for a vehicle with an out-of-state title, completed by Colorado law enforcement, a licensed Colorado dealer or a Colorado emissions station. A new vehicle on a manufacturer’s statement of origin is exempt, and the car must be with you, so plan the visit for the week it arrives.
  4. Check whether you need an emissions test. Emissions testing applies in the Front Range area, including Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas and Jefferson counties and parts of Adams, Arapahoe, Larimer and Weld counties. New gasoline vehicles are exempt for their first seven model years, and the rules for hybrids and older cars vary, so confirm with your county.
  5. Carry Colorado liability insurance. Colorado requires at least $25,000 for injury or death to one person, $50,000 for injury or death to more than one person and $15,000 for property damage, and a new resident needs a policy that meets Colorado law before registering.

Rules and fees change, and Colorado’s state sites do not always load for automated checks, so confirm each item with your county motor vehicle office before you go:
