Looking for auto transport in South Dakota? What car shipping in South Dakota costs depends on the route, the vehicle and whether it runs. We ran real quotes from our platform for thirty-two South Dakota lanes around Sioux Falls, Rapid City and Aberdeen, from an 182-mile hop between Sioux Falls and Omaha to a 1,419-mile haul between Sioux Falls and Phoenix, and an open-trailer sedan ranged from $200 to $1,546. Here is what South Dakota auto transport costs by vehicle type and route, including car shipping from South Dakota to Minneapolis, Omaha, Denver and Phoenix, how the price changes by direction, how Sturgis, Ellsworth Air Force Base and collector-vehicle moves work, and the registration and insurance rules if you are moving here. Every price is door to door, and you can read how that works in our door-to-door auto transport guide.
What it costs to ship a car to or from South Dakota
Whether you need an auto transport service in South Dakota for a move, a purchase or a dealer transfer, every figure below is a real quote from our platform for one vehicle on an open trailer, running, priced separately for each vehicle type. All lanes were priced on October 30, 2026. Sioux Falls stands in for the east and the I-29 and I-90 corridor, Rapid City for the Black Hills and the west, and Aberdeen for the northeast, and each lane is labeled by its actual cities. Most moves are quoted in both directions, so you can see what changes when the car is arriving in South Dakota or leaving it. South Dakota has far fewer people than the metros around it, so a pickup in Sioux Falls or Rapid City is the easy case for a carrier, and ranches, small towns and farm addresses are served from the same lanes with a meeting point when needed.

Distances are the road miles in each quote, and prices are in dollars. The price per mile falls fast as the trip gets longer, from $2.11 a mile on Aberdeen → Fargo to $0.74 on Sioux Falls → Phoenix. Pickups cost a median of 32% more than a sedan on these lanes and vans a median of 22% more, while an SUV was priced below the sedan on 12 of 32 lanes. Treat these as a guide, and get a live quote for your exact pickup and delivery points. One figure looks off: the van from Rapid City to Minneapolis came back at $554, below the $894 sedan, and our pricing tool marked it low confidence and returned the same number when we ran it again, so treat that one with caution.

Every dot is a real quote from the lane table above. Pick your vehicle and options to re-price every lane, see how the price per mile changes with distance, and find the real lanes closest to your trip.
How the price per mile changes with distance
Distance is the biggest driver, but the price per mile falls as the trip gets longer. For a sedan it ran $1.10–$2.11 per mile under 450 miles and $0.74–$1.09 per mile at 1,000 miles or more. A short run costs more per mile because the driver still has to load, unload and reposition the truck whether the trip is 182 miles or 1,000. Sioux Falls to Omaha is 182 miles and cost $200, or $1.10 a mile, while Sioux Falls to Phoenix is about 8 times as far but only 5 times the price.
Pickups and vans cost more than sedans
A pickup cost a median of 32% more than a sedan on the same lane, from 13% less to 97% more, and a van a median of 22% more. An SUV was priced within a median of 6% of the sedan and was cheaper on 12 of 32. South Dakota ships plenty of pickups, heavy-duty trucks and ranch and farm work vehicles, so if you are shipping one, check the pickup and van columns for your route, and dually trucks, lifted vehicles and box trucks need a quote of their own. Our pickup truck shipping guide has the details.

South Dakota is about 380 miles from the Minnesota line to the Wyoming line, and the state sits in two time zones, so trips inside it are served from the same lanes: Mitchell, Brookings, Watertown, Huron, Pierre, Yankton, Spearfish, Sturgis and the small towns from Sioux Falls, Rapid City and Aberdeen. Our Minnesota, Nebraska and Montana guides cover neighboring lanes.

Recent jobs to and from South Dakota
These are two orders, three vehicles, that started in South Dakota, taken from the signed bills of lading and the pickup and delivery photos the driver filed. Customer names, street addresses and VINs are left out. Dates are the signature dates on the bills of lading and miles are our approximation. One order is from March 2026 and the other from August 2026, and three vehicles is a small sample, so treat these as examples, not promises.
| Vehicle | Route | Approx. miles | Picked up | Delivered | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1972 Dodge Demon | White, SD → Boise, ID | 1,160 | Mar 7, 2026 | Mar 9, 2026 | 2 days |
| 1938 Indian Four motorcycle | Onida, SD → Davenport, IA | 630 | Aug 20, 2026 | Aug 24, 2026 | 4 days |
| 1941 Indian Scout motorcycle (with a Henderson wheel) | Onida, SD → Davenport, IA | 630 | Aug 20, 2026 | Aug 24, 2026 | 4 days |
All three vehicles left South Dakota. The Dodge Demon was a classic muscle car shipped about 1,160 miles from White, near Brookings, to Boise in two days by the signature dates. The two Indian motorcycles were collector pieces from an auction in Onida, near Pierre, and rode together about 630 miles to a warehouse in Davenport, Iowa. The trip took four days by the signature dates, over a weekend, and both bikes were listed as not drivable, which is common for antiques, so tell us when a vehicle does not run. Motorcycles and collector vehicles are priced separately from cars, so request a quote that describes the vehicle. Our classic car transport guide has the details on collector cars.
Inoperable and enclosed vehicles: what they add
On our platform an inoperable vehicle adds about 25% to the open-trailer price (a median of about $190 for a sedan in our tests), because the driver needs a winch and extra loading time, and enclosed transport adds about 75%, because enclosed trailers carry fewer cars. For example, a sedan quoted at $543 open from Sioux Falls to Denver works out to about $950 enclosed, or about $1,188 if it also does not run. Collector cars, exotics and high-value vehicles are usually shipped enclosed, which many owners choose for winter road salt, gravel and hail. See our inoperable vehicle guide, our classic car transport guide and our exotic and luxury car shipping guide for details.
Military, Sturgis, students and when to ship
A few patterns recur in South Dakota car shipping. These are general industry experience and the state’s own calendar, not our quote data, so compare a live quote for your date:
- Military. Ellsworth Air Force Base, next to Rapid City at Box Elder, is the first main operating base for the B-21 bomber, so moves in and out are expected to stay busy. Ask your carrier how gate access will work and consider meeting the driver outside the gate. Active-duty members can ask about our military discount.
- Sturgis and motorcycles. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally fills the Black Hills every August with hundreds of thousands of visitors, and many bikes ship in and out around it. Motorcycles are priced separately from cars, as the two Indian motorcycles above show.
- Students. South Dakota State University in Brookings, the University of South Dakota in Vermillion and South Dakota Mines in Rapid City bring move-in in late August and move-out in May.
- Relocation and healthcare. Sioux Falls is the state’s largest city, with banking, healthcare and a growing job market, and it draws relocations from the surrounding states.
- Farms, ranches and rural communities. Many South Dakota addresses are on gravel roads and ranch driveways, so a full-size car carrier may need a meeting point, and harvest and calving seasons can make rural drivers and routes busy.
- Collectors. Vintage cars and motorcycles move through South Dakota auctions and collections, as our Dodge Demon and Indian jobs show, and they often ship enclosed.
- Blizzards and winter roads. Snow, ice and wind can close I-90 and I-29 from about November through March, so keep your window flexible and check the South Dakota DOT’s SD511 travel information before pickup.
A flexible pickup window of a few days usually gets a faster carrier match, and booking a few weeks ahead matters more in winter, at harvest and around the Sturgis rally.
Distance, transit time and the main corridors
South Dakota’s traffic runs on a few roads:
- I-90 crosses the state from Sioux Falls through Mitchell, Chamberlain, Wall, Rapid City and Sturgis, about 410 miles in all, and I-29 runs north-south along the eastern edge through Sioux Falls and Brookings to Sioux City, Omaha and Kansas City. They are the two roads most carriers use.
- US-12 and US-281 connect Aberdeen to Minnesota and South Dakota, and US-14, US-83 and US-85 serve Pierre, the center and the Black Hills, so a pickup in a small town is often routed to I-90 or I-29 first.
- Distances inside the state. South Dakota is about 380 miles from east to west, and the west half is thinly populated, so a trip from Sioux Falls to Rapid City is a long haul by itself and rural pickups may need extra scheduling time.
- Winter closures. I-90 and I-29 can be closed during blizzards, and a storm in South Dakota, Minnesota or Wyoming can delay a truck that is already on the road.
Typical open-trailer transit is about 1 to 2 days for trips under 450 miles, 2 to 4 days for 500 to 900 miles, 3 to 6 days for 1,000 to 1,500 miles and 6 to 9 days coast to coast, and a storm can add a day or more. Those are industry-typical ranges rather than guarantees, and the clock starts when a driver picks the car up, not when you book.
Moving to South Dakota: registration, excise tax and insurance
If you are moving to South Dakota, the car arrives before the paperwork starts. These are the rules we found in search excerpts, county pages and insurance sources, so confirm each item with the South Dakota Department of Revenue or your county treasurer before you go:
- Registration. Most sources we found say a new resident has 90 days to title and register a vehicle from another state, and a vehicle bought in South Dakota should be titled within 45 days, with late fees after that. We did not read an official page that confirms the deadlines, so ask the Department of Revenue or a county office. Official information is at dor.sd.gov.
- Motor vehicle excise tax. Sources we saw describe a 4% excise tax on a vehicle when you title it in South Dakota, with credit for tax already paid to the state you came from. We did not confirm how it applies to a car you already own, so check with your county treasurer.
- VIN check and paperwork. Sources say an out-of-state title usually needs the original title, your driver license and a title and registration application, and some counties ask for a VIN inspection, so call the county first.
- Inspection. The sources we checked did not describe a required annual safety inspection or emissions test for passenger cars, but we did not find an official statement, so confirm with the Department of Revenue.
- Insurance. Sources we found say South Dakota requires liability limits of at least $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage, plus uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage of $25,000 and $50,000. Confirm with the South Dakota Division of Insurance or your insurer, and most lenders and leases require more.
- Military. Active-duty members stationed in South Dakota but domiciled elsewhere can often keep their home-state registration, so ask your base legal office.
Rules and fees change, so confirm each item with the state before you go. Our moving-to-South-Dakota tip: ship the car to arrive when you can start the registration, so the deadline does not run out while the car is on a truck.
Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Aberdeen and the rest of South Dakota
- Sioux Falls and the east. Sioux Falls, Brookings and Vermillion on I-29 and I-90 have university, healthcare, banking and relocation moves, and Sioux Falls is the closest hub to Minneapolis and Omaha.
- Rapid City and the Black Hills. Rapid City, Box Elder, Spearfish, Sturgis and Custer have military, tourism, rally and relocation moves, and Rapid City is the last big hub before Wyoming and Montana.
- Aberdeen and the northeast. Aberdeen and Watertown on US-12 and US-281 have regional, farm and relocation moves, served from I-29 or through Sioux Falls.
- Pierre, Mitchell, Huron and Yankton. The capital and the middle of the state sit on US-14, US-83 and I-90, and Onida, where our two Indian motorcycles started, is a small town north of Pierre.
- Ranches and the small towns. Smaller communities and ranches across the west and the Missouri River country are served from the same lanes, often with a meeting point on a main road.
Dealerships and auctions in South Dakota
Dealers and auction yards are some of the most common pickup and delivery points for car carriers, and they are commercial addresses where a full-size trailer can usually reach. There is no single official ranking of South Dakota dealerships, so these are examples drawn from company listings rather than a top-ten list. For the full picture of auction pickups, see our auction and dealer car shipping guide.
Auction yards
- IAA — IAA’s page for its Sioux Falls branch gives an address in Lennox, a few miles south of the city, and third-party directories list weekly sales on Tuesdays.
- Copart — Copart lists a yard in Rapid City, and we did not find one in Sioux Falls.
- Collector auctions — our two Indian motorcycles above came from a collector auction in Onida, so antique and specialty sales also move vehicles out of the state.
- Verify first — these listings come from company pages and directories, and some are old, so confirm each on the company’s own location page before the driver arrives.
- After collisions and hail — Copart, IAA and other auctions sell damaged and salvage vehicles that often do not run, so price those as inoperable.
Each yard has its own release and gate-pass rules, so confirm them before the driver arrives. Auction locations change, so check each company’s own location finder. Dealers shipping cars to out-of-state buyers, and buyers having a car delivered to their South Dakota home, are both common, and the same open, enclosed and inoperable pricing above applies.
How to choose a car shipping company in South Dakota
Searches for auto transport companies in South Dakota find long lists of names, but there is no official ranking, and the right company is the one that is licensed, insured and clear about price. Check these before you book with anyone:
- Look up the company’s federal registration. Every interstate auto transporter or broker needs a USDOT number and operating authority. You can check them on the FMCSA company snapshot and the FMCSA licensing and insurance search.
- Know whether you are dealing with a broker or a carrier. A carrier owns the trucks. A marketplace like Transportli matches your car with a vetted carrier on your lane and shows you the price up front.
- Ask what the quote includes. Our quotes are for one vehicle on an open trailer, and inoperable and enclosed are priced as adjustments, as shown above. Be wary of a price far below the others, because it may not find a driver.
- Understand the pickup window. Carriers give a window, not an exact time, and a flexible window of a few days usually gets a faster match.
- Document the car. The bill of lading is the condition report, so take dated photos at pickup and delivery and note any damage before you sign.
Preparing your car for pickup
- Wash the car and photograph it from every side, inside and out, with the date on.
- Leave about a quarter tank of fuel and check for leaks, since carriers may refuse a car that leaks fluid.
- Remove personal items and toll tags. Carriers generally do not insure belongings left in the car, and any toll transponder should come off before pickup so you are not charged for the truck’s tolls.
- In winter, clear the ice and snow and check the road conditions for your route and keep the car where a truck can reach it, and tell the carrier if a storm may delay the pickup.
- Fold or secure mirrors, antennas and racks and tell the carrier about anything unusual: a lowered car, a lift kit, a roof rack or a car that does not run.
- Plan the handoff. A large truck cannot always reach a gravel driveway or a narrow street, so be ready to meet the driver at a nearby lot, and make sure someone can inspect and sign the bill of lading at both ends.

Usually to a main road or a lot, but gravel roads, long ranch driveways and tight turns can be too much for a full-size car carrier, so the driver may ask you to meet at a wider road or a parking lot, and rural pickups can take longer to schedule.

How do I choose an auto transport company in South Dakota?
Check the company’s USDOT number and operating authority on the FMCSA site, find out whether you are dealing with a broker or a carrier, and ask what the quote includes. Be wary of a price far below the others, because it may not find a driver, and document the car with dated photos at pickup and delivery.
