Looking for auto transport in North Dakota? What car shipping in North Dakota costs depends on the route, the vehicle and whether it runs. We ran real quotes from our platform for thirty-one North Dakota lanes around Fargo, Bismarck and Minot, from a 235-mile hop between Minneapolis and Fargo to a 1,803-mile haul between Orlando and Fargo, and an open-trailer sedan ranged from $419 to $1,501. Here is what North Dakota auto transport costs by vehicle type and route, including car shipping from North Dakota to Florida, Minneapolis, Chicago, Denver and Seattle, how the price changes by direction, how military and oil-patch moves work, and the registration and insurance rules if you are moving here. Every price is door to door, and you can read how that works in our door-to-door auto transport guide.

What it costs to ship a car to or from North Dakota

Whether you need an auto transport service in North Dakota for a move, a purchase or a dealer transfer, every figure below is a real quote from our platform for one vehicle on an open trailer, running, priced separately for each vehicle type. All lanes were priced on October 26, 2026. Fargo stands in for the Red River Valley and the east, Bismarck for the center of the state and Minot for the north and the northwest, and each lane is labeled by its actual cities. Most moves are quoted in both directions, so you can see what changes when the car is arriving in North Dakota or leaving it. North Dakota has fewer people than any of the big metros around it, so a pickup in Fargo, Bismarck or Minot is the easy case for a carrier, and farms, oil-patch towns and small communities are served from the same lanes with a meeting point when needed.

Distances are the road miles in each quote, and prices are in dollars. The price per mile falls fast as the trip gets longer, from $1.92 a mile on Billings → Bismarck to $0.73 on Fargo → Orlando. Pickups cost a median of 42% more than a sedan on these lanes and vans a median of 18% more, while an SUV was priced below the sedan on 9 of 31 lanes. Treat these as a guide, and get a live quote for your exact pickup and delivery points.

How the price per mile changes with distance

Distance is the biggest driver, but the price per mile falls as the trip gets longer. For a sedan it ran $1.16–$1.92 per mile under 450 miles and $0.73–$1.21 per mile at 1,000 miles or more. A short run costs more per mile because the driver still has to load, unload and reposition the truck whether the trip is 235 miles or 1,000. Minneapolis to Fargo is 235 miles and cost $427, or $1.82 a mile, while Orlando to Fargo is about 8 times as far but only 4 times the price.

Pickups and vans cost more than sedans

A pickup cost a median of 42% more than a sedan on the same lane, from 16% less to 103% more, and a van a median of 18% more. An SUV was priced within a median of 16% of the sedan and was cheaper on 9 of 31. North Dakota ships plenty of pickups, heavy-duty trucks and farm and oil-field work vehicles, so if you are shipping one, check the pickup and van columns for your route, and dually trucks, lifted vehicles and box trucks need a quote of their own. Our pickup truck shipping guide has the details.

A sedan arriving in Fargo, Bismarck or Minot cost more than the same trip leaving on 12 of the 15 corridors: Chicago to Fargo 77% higher ($1,077 vs. $609), Kansas City to Bismarck 77% higher ($1,206 vs. $682), Chicago to Minot 66% higher ($1,279 vs. $770), Dallas to Fargo 53% higher ($1,304 vs. $851). Leaving the hub cost more on 2: Fargo to Des Moines 52% higher ($796 vs. $525), Fargo to Omaha 47% higher ($780 vs. $531). About the same both ways: Fargo and Minneapolis. The price follows how many cars are moving each way on that lane, so if you can ship in either direction, or can drive one way and ship the other, check both. We measured this across our whole dataset in our study of 287 lanes priced both ways.

Recent jobs to and from North Dakota

These are two jobs that started or ended in North Dakota, taken from the signed bills of lading and the pickup and delivery photos the driver filed. Customer names, street addresses, VINs and plates are left out, and the photos are blurred where needed. Dates are the signature dates on the bills of lading and miles are our approximation. Both orders are from October 2026, and two jobs is a small sample, so treat these as examples, not promises.

One job came into North Dakota and one left. The Buick was a military move to Minot Air Force Base, about 1,290 miles from Texas, and it was delivered in two days by the signature dates, with the driver suggesting a lot outside the gate, which is how carriers often handle base deliveries. The Polaris was a side-by-side shipped about 1,240 miles from Mandan, next to Bismarck, to North Las Vegas on a tilt trailer, also in two days. Powersports and off-road vehicles are a real part of North Dakota shipping, and they are priced separately from cars, so request a quote that describes the vehicle. Our military auto transport guide has the details on base moves.

Inoperable and enclosed vehicles: what they add

On our platform an inoperable vehicle adds about 25% to the open-trailer price (a median of about $190 for a sedan in our tests), because the driver needs a winch and extra loading time, and enclosed transport adds about 75%, because enclosed trailers carry fewer cars. For example, a sedan quoted at $1,317 open from Fargo to Orlando works out to about $2,305 enclosed, or about $2,881 if it also does not run. Collector cars, exotics and high-value vehicles are usually shipped enclosed, which many owners choose for winter road salt, gravel and hail. See our inoperable vehicle guide, our classic car transport guide and our exotic and luxury car shipping guide for details.

Military, oil patch, students and when to ship

A few patterns recur in North Dakota car shipping. These are general industry experience and the state’s own calendar, not our quote data, so compare a live quote for your date:

  • Military. Minot Air Force Base and Grand Forks Air Force Base bring moves in and out all year, and one of our recent jobs went to Minot AFB. Ask your carrier how gate access will work and consider meeting the driver outside the gate. Active-duty members can ask about our military discount.
  • Oil patch. The Bakken oil fields around Williston, Watford City and Dickinson draw workers and rotations from across the country, with pickups, work trucks and second vehicles moving in and out, and pay and project cycles can make demand swing.
  • Students. North Dakota State University in Fargo and the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks bring move-in in late August and move-out in May.
  • Snowbirds and retirees. “North Dakota to Florida” is a steady search, driven by people who leave before winter or move south for good, so fall and spring are busy on the Florida lanes. Our Florida guide covers the other end.
  • Farms and rural communities. Many North Dakota addresses are on gravel roads and farm driveways, so a full-size car carrier may need a meeting point, and harvest season can make rural drivers and routes busy.
  • Powersports. Side-by-sides, ATVs and snowmobiles are part of the state’s recreation, as the Polaris job above shows, and they ship separately from cars.
  • Blizzards and winter roads. Snow, ice and wind can close I-94, I-29 and US-2 from about November through March, so keep your window flexible and check the NDDOT travel information before pickup.

A flexible pickup window of a few days usually gets a faster carrier match, and booking a few weeks ahead matters more in winter, at harvest and around big events.

Distance, transit time and the main corridors

North Dakota’s traffic runs on a few roads:

  • I-94 crosses the state from Fargo through Jamestown, Bismarck, Mandan and Dickinson, connecting Minneapolis to Billings and Seattle, and I-29 runs north-south through Fargo and Grand Forks to Sioux Falls, Omaha and Kansas City. They are the two roads most carriers use.
  • US-2 runs across the north through Grand Forks, Devils Lake, Minot and Williston, and US-52, US-83 and US-85 connect Minot, Bismarck and the oil patch to the south, so a pickup in the north or northwest is often routed to I-94 first.
  • Distances inside the state. North Dakota is about 340 miles from east to west, so a trip from Fargo to Williston is a long haul by itself, and rural pickups may need extra scheduling time.
  • Winter closures. I-94 and I-29 can be closed during blizzards, and a storm in North Dakota or Montana can delay a truck that is already on the road.

Typical open-trailer transit is about 1 to 2 days for trips under 450 miles, 2 to 4 days for 500 to 900 miles, 3 to 6 days for 1,000 to 1,500 miles and 6 to 9 days coast to coast, and a storm can add a day or more. Those are industry-typical ranges rather than guarantees, and the clock starts when a driver picks the car up, not when you book.

Moving to North Dakota: registration, excise tax and insurance

If you are moving to North Dakota, the car arrives before the paperwork starts. These are the rules we found in search excerpts and insurance sources, so confirm each item with the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) before you go:

  • Registration. The sources we found disagree on the deadline for new residents: some say 30 days and others say 90 days from establishing residency. We did not find an official page that settles it, so ask NDDOT or a county office. Official information is at dot.nd.gov.
  • Motor vehicle excise tax. Sources we saw describe a 5% motor vehicle excise tax on the purchase price when you title a vehicle, plus a small title fee. We did not confirm how it applies to a car you already own, so check with NDDOT.
  • Inspection. The sources we checked did not describe a required annual safety inspection or emissions test for private cars, but we did not find an official statement, so confirm with NDDOT.
  • Insurance. Sources we found say North Dakota requires liability limits of at least $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage, along with uninsured motorist and personal injury protection coverage because it is a no-fault state. Confirm with the North Dakota Insurance Department or your insurer, and most lenders and leases require more.
  • Military. Active-duty members stationed in North Dakota but domiciled elsewhere can often keep their home-state registration, so ask your base legal office.

Rules and fees change, so confirm each item with NDDOT before you go. Our moving-to-North-Dakota tip: ship the car to arrive when you can start the registration, so the deadline does not run out while the car is on a truck.

Fargo, Bismarck, Minot and the rest of North Dakota

  • Fargo and the Red River Valley. Fargo, West Fargo and Grand Forks on I-29 and I-94 have university, healthcare, tech and relocation moves, and Fargo is the closest hub to Minneapolis.
  • Bismarck, Mandan and the center. The capital area on I-94 has government, healthcare and relocation moves, and Mandan is where the Polaris job above started.
  • Minot and the north. Minot is a military and regional hub on US-2 and US-52, and its lanes are served from I-94 or through Bismarck.
  • Williston, Watford City and Dickinson. The oil patch in the northwest and west has workforce moves, trucks and rotations, with long distances from the nearest big metro.
  • Jamestown and the small towns. Smaller communities on I-94 and US-281 are served from the same lanes, often with a meeting point on a main road.

Dealerships and auctions in North Dakota

Dealers and auction yards are some of the most common pickup and delivery points for car carriers, and they are commercial addresses where a full-size trailer can usually reach. There is no single official ranking of North Dakota dealerships, so these are examples drawn from company listings rather than a top-ten list. For the full picture of auction pickups, see our auction and dealer car shipping guide.

Auction yards

  • Copart — Copart opened a yard in Bismarck in June 2021, according to its press release, and third-party directories list weekly online sales there.
  • IAA — directory listings show an IAA branch in Fargo, with weekly sales on Thursdays.
  • Verify first — these listings come from press releases and directories, and some are old, so confirm each on the company’s own location page before the driver arrives.
  • After collisions and hail — Copart, IAA and other auctions sell damaged and salvage vehicles that often do not run, so price those as inoperable.

Each yard has its own release and gate-pass rules, so confirm them before the driver arrives. Auction locations change, so check each company’s own location finder. Dealers shipping cars to out-of-state buyers, and buyers having a car delivered to their North Dakota home, are both common, and the same open, enclosed and inoperable pricing above applies.

How to choose a car shipping company in North Dakota

Searches for auto transport companies in North Dakota find long lists of names, but there is no official ranking, and the right company is the one that is licensed, insured and clear about price. Check these before you book with anyone:

  • Look up the company’s federal registration. Every interstate auto transporter or broker needs a USDOT number and operating authority. You can check them on the FMCSA company snapshot and the FMCSA licensing and insurance search.
  • Know whether you are dealing with a broker or a carrier. A carrier owns the trucks. A broker or marketplace like Transportli matches your car with a vetted carrier on your lane and shows you the price up front.
  • Ask what the quote includes. Our quotes are for one vehicle on an open trailer, and inoperable and enclosed are priced as adjustments, as shown above. Be wary of a price far below the others, because it may not find a driver.
  • Understand the pickup window. Carriers give a window, not an exact time, and a flexible window of a few days usually gets a faster match.
  • Document the car. The bill of lading is the condition report, so take dated photos at pickup and delivery and note any damage before you sign.

Preparing your car for pickup

  1. Wash the car and photograph it from every side, inside and out, with the date on.
  2. Leave about a quarter tank of fuel and check for leaks, since carriers may refuse a car that leaks fluid.
  3. Remove personal items and toll tags. Carriers generally do not insure belongings left in the car, and any toll transponder should come off before pickup so you are not charged for the truck’s tolls.
  4. In winter, clear the ice and snow and check the road conditions for your route and keep the car where a truck can reach it, and tell the carrier if a storm may delay the pickup.
  5. Fold or secure mirrors, antennas and racks and tell the carrier about anything unusual: a lowered car, a lift kit, a roof rack or a car that does not run.
  6. Plan the handoff. A large truck cannot always reach a gravel driveway or a narrow street, so be ready to meet the driver at a nearby lot, and make sure someone can inspect and sign the bill of lading at both ends.

How do I choose an auto transport company in North Dakota?

Check the company’s USDOT number and operating authority on the FMCSA site, find out whether you are dealing with a broker or a carrier, and ask what the quote includes. Be wary of a price far below the others, because it may not find a driver, and document the car with dated photos at pickup and delivery.
