This free car shipping calculator turns two ZIP codes into a price range in a second. Pick your vehicle, an open or enclosed trailer and whether the car runs, and it shows a lowest, typical and highest price built from 570 real car shipping quotes on our platform in 21 states. It is the same tool people call a car shipping cost calculator, a car shipping estimate calculator or a car shipping rate calculator, and it needs no email address, phone number or sign-up to show you a number. When you want an exact price, one click takes you to the quote form with your route already filled in.
How the car shipping calculator works
- Enter the pickup and delivery ZIP codes. The calculator finds both places and draws the route on the map.
- Choose the vehicle. Sedan, SUV, pickup or van. Larger vehicles cost more: across our lanes a pickup was a median 47% above a sedan.
- Choose the trailer and the condition. Open is the standard and the cheapest. Enclosed adds a premium, and a car that does not run needs a winch and adds a surcharge.
- Read the range. Typical is our best estimate for the lane. Lowest and highest show the spread we saw around it.
- Get exact quotes when you are ready. The quote form asks for your car and contact details so carriers can price your job, not an average one.
How accurate is the estimate?
We tested it, which most calculators do not tell you. For each vehicle type we hid lanes from the model and asked it to price them, then compared the answer with the real quote. The typical miss was about 10% for a sedan, and 8 in 10 sedan lanes landed within about 20% of the real price.
| Vehicle | Typical error | Lanes within 25% of the real price | 8 in 10 lanes within |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sedan | 10% | 89% | 20% |
| SUV | 9% | 86% | 21% |
| Pickup | 12% | 82% | 24% |
| Van | 12% | 82% | 24% |
The range around the typical price is wide on purpose, because a calculator cannot see everything a carrier sees. It is a guide to whether a quote is in the right area, not a quote. The estimate cannot know:
- Your pickup date and the season. Prices differ by week and by direction on busy routes. Our Car Shipping Price Index re-measures 20 lanes every Monday.
- Exactly which car it is. A heavier or longer vehicle, a lifted truck or a modified car can cost more. See our truck shipping guide.
- How many cars you are shipping. In our tests two cars together cost a median 10% less per car, so ask for a quote with all the cars on it.
- Access. A tight street, a gated community or a rural address can change the pickup and the price.
What car shipping costs by distance
The longer the trip, the more it costs in total and the less it costs per mile. These are median open-trailer prices for a running sedan across our 570 lanes, which is what the calculator starts from:
| Distance | Lanes | Sedan, median | Per mile, median |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 250 miles | 124 | $282 | $2.12 |
| 250 to 500 miles | 81 | $445 | $1.20 |
| 500 to 1,000 miles | 151 | $712 | $1.00 |
| 1,000 to 1,500 miles | 106 | $942 | $0.76 |
| 1,500 to 2,000 miles | 40 | $1,120 | $0.66 |
| 2,000 miles or more | 66 | $1,372 | $0.56 |

Open, enclosed and cars that do not run
The calculator prices an open trailer for a running vehicle as its baseline, then adjusts. Enclosed is priced at a 75% premium, which matches what we measured: across 20 real lanes enclosed was a median 74% more for a sedan. A car that does not run adds 25%, close to the median 25% we measured across 80 quotes on 20 lanes (about $190 for a sedan, from nothing to $809). Our open vs. enclosed guide explains when enclosed is worth it.
From estimate to exact quote
Transportli is a freight marketplace, not a carrier. When you click “Get exact quotes”, the form carries over your ZIP codes, vehicle type, trailer and condition. You add the year, make and model, your pickup window and how to reach you, and we match the job with carriers on our platform that have been checked for active operating authority, insurance and safety rating, so you compare prices for your own car instead of an average. You can also check any carrier yourself on the FMCSA company snapshot.
How to pay less
- Ship open unless the car is a classic, an exotic or needs to arrive untouched.
- Ship two cars together if you have them, and quote them on one request.
- Fix a car that does not run before pickup if it is cheap to do.
- Compare a nearby big-city drop-off if your destination is a small town.
Each of these moved the price in our own tests. The numbers are in our cheap car shipping guide.
Car shipping calculator: frequently asked questions
Is the car shipping calculator free?
Yes. It is free and needs no account. You do not have to enter an email address or phone number to see a price range.
Do I need to give my personal information?
No, not for the estimate. You only enter two ZIP codes and choose the vehicle, trailer and condition. Personal details are only asked for on the quote form, if you decide to request exact quotes.
How does the car shipping calculator work?
It uses a model fitted to 570 real quotes from our platform on lanes across 21 states. For your two ZIP codes it estimates the price for the vehicle you chose, pulls the estimate toward real lanes that start and end nearby, and shows a lowest, typical and highest price.
How accurate is the estimate?
On lanes it had not seen, the typical error was about 10% for a sedan and 12% for a pickup, and 8 in 10 sedan lanes landed within about 20% of the real price. It is a guide, not a quote.
Is the estimate the same as a quote?
No. An estimate is built from past quotes on similar lanes. A quote is a price for your car, your dates and your addresses from a carrier on our platform, so it can be higher or lower.
Does the car shipping calculator include insurance?
The estimate reflects typical carrier prices on our platform. Cargo insurance varies by carrier, so ask for the insurance certificate and read the limit and the exclusions before you book.
Why is the price different from another calculator?
Calculators use different data, trailer assumptions and ranges. Ours is built from real quotes, shows a range and states how accurate it was when tested, and assumes an open trailer and a running vehicle unless you change them.
Does the estimate change with the season?
The calculator does not take a date, so it cannot. Prices do move by week and direction, and the Car Shipping Price Index tracks 20 lanes every Monday.
Can I use it for two cars?
It prices one vehicle. In our tests shipping two cars together cost a median 10% less per car, so request a quote with both cars on it.
Does it work for shipping a car abroad?
No. It covers car shipping between ZIP codes in the United States. For Alaska and Hawaii the ocean leg sets the price, so see our Alaska and Hawaii guides.
Can I get a quote for a truck or a van?
Yes. Choose Pickup or Van in the calculator. Pickups cost more than sedans, and our truck shipping guide shows by how much on real lanes.
