Looking for auto transport in Massachusetts? What car shipping in Massachusetts costs depends on the route, the vehicle and whether it runs. We ran real quotes from our platform for thirty-two Massachusetts lanes, from a 50-mile hop between Boston and Providence to a 3,000-mile haul between Los Angeles and Boston, and an open-trailer sedan ranged from $129 to $1,659. Here is what Massachusetts auto transport costs by vehicle type and route, including auto transport in Boston and car shipping from Massachusetts to Florida, how the price changes with direction, what inoperable and enclosed shipping add, and what to do about Massachusetts registration, inspection, excise tax and insurance after your car arrives.

What it costs to ship a car to or from Massachusetts

Whether you need an auto transport service in Massachusetts for a move, a purchase or a dealer transfer, every figure below is a real quote from our platform for one vehicle on an open trailer, running, priced separately for each vehicle type on October 20, 2026. Boston stands in for eastern Massachusetts, with Worcester covering central Massachusetts and Springfield the west, and each lane is labeled by its actual cities. Most moves are quoted in both directions, so you can see what changes when the car is arriving in Massachusetts or leaving it.

Distances are the road miles in each quote, and prices are in dollars. The price per mile falls fast as the trip gets longer, from $2.62 a mile on Providence → Boston to $0.50 on Los Angeles → Boston. Pickups cost a median of 30% more than a sedan on these lanes and vans a median of 34% more, while an SUV was priced below the sedan on 9 of 32 lanes. Treat these as a guide, and get a live quote for your exact pickup and delivery points.

How the price per mile changes with distance

Distance is the biggest driver, but the price per mile falls as the trip gets longer. For a sedan it ran $1.03–$2.62 per mile under 450 miles and $0.50–$0.90 per mile at 1,000 miles or more. A short run costs more per mile because the driver still has to load, unload and reposition the truck whether the trip is 50 miles or 1,000. Boston to Providence is 50 miles and cost $129, or $2.58 a mile, while Los Angeles to Boston is about 60 times as far but only 12 times the price.

Pickups and vans cost more than sedans

A pickup cost a median of 30% more than a sedan on the same lane, from 12% less to 155% more, and a van a median of 34% more. An SUV was priced within a median of 4% of the sedan and was cheaper on 9 of 32. If you are shipping a pickup, check the pickup column for your route, and dually trucks, lifted vehicles and anything oversized need a quote of their own.

Popular Massachusetts car shipping routes

Boston to New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Hartford and Providence

Inside Massachusetts: Worcester and Springfield

Massachusetts is a small state with three different pickup areas. Boston and the I-95 and I-93 suburbs are the hub for the quotes above, Worcester and central Massachusetts sit along I-90 and I-290 about an hour west, and Springfield and the Pioneer Valley look south toward Hartford and New York along I-91, so check our Connecticut auto transport guide if you live near the state line. A sedan: Worcester to New York was $352 (179 mi); New York to Worcester was $379 (177 mi); Worcester to Orlando was $1,037 (1,259 mi); Orlando to Worcester was $772 (1,255 mi); Springfield to Philadelphia was $375 (236 mi); Philadelphia to Springfield was $536 (233 mi); Springfield to Miami was $1,005 (1,429 mi); Miami to Springfield was $901 (1,425 mi); Boston to Providence was $129 (50 mi); Providence to Boston was $131 (50 mi).

Arriving in Boston cost more on 3: New York to Boston 12% higher ($459 vs. $408), Portland to Boston 9% higher ($289 vs. $265), Providence to Boston 2% higher ($131 vs. $129). The price follows how many cars are moving each way on that lane, so if you can ship in either direction, or can drive one way and ship the other, check both.

Real Massachusetts jobs: how long they took

These are ten recent jobs that started in Massachusetts, taken from the signed bills of lading and the pickup and delivery photos the drivers filed. They range from a short hop between two Massachusetts cities and a GMC Yukon moving from one dealership to another to a 1991 Buick Riviera going to Tucson, and three of the ten started at auction yards, Copart North Boston in North Billerica, IAA Boston in Shirley and Manheim New England in North Dighton. Customer names, street addresses, VINs, plates and carrier details are left out, and the photos are blurred where needed. We show pickup and delivery cities as the drivers’ photos place them, dates as signed on the bill of lading and approximate miles, which are our own estimates.

Photos are from the drivers’ inspections at pickup and delivery. License plates, signs, lot numbers and bystanders are blurred or out of frame, and the CR-V has no photo here because its pickup photos show only the interior. The Ram ProMaster had visible crash damage, so ask for an inoperable quote if your vehicle does not run, and the 1991 Buick Riviera, like any classic, is often shipped enclosed, so ask for an enclosed quote. The F-150 was photographed on an open car carrier at the Copart yard. The long hauls took 2 to 6 days and are examples rather than promises, and the fastest jobs were short trips.

Inoperable and enclosed vehicles: what they add

On our platform an inoperable vehicle adds about 25% to the open-trailer price (a median of about $190 for a sedan in our tests), because the driver needs a winch and extra loading time, and enclosed transport adds about 75%, because enclosed trailers carry fewer cars. For example, a sedan quoted at $1,360 open from Boston to Dallas works out to about $2,380 enclosed, or about $2,975 if it also does not run. Collector cars, motorcycles and high-value vehicles are usually shipped enclosed, which many owners choose for storms, hail and winter weather. Our classic car transport guide covers enclosed shipping in detail.

Snowbirds, students, the military, the coast and when to ship

A few patterns recur in Massachusetts car shipping. These are general industry experience and the state’s own calendar, not our October quote data, so compare a live quote for your date:

  • Snowbirds and Florida. Florida is the Massachusetts route people search for most, and many Massachusetts residents spend the winter there and send a car south in the fall and back north in the spring. One carrier guide says fall demand for Florida peaks from October through mid-November and suggests booking four to six weeks ahead, so book early if you leave in that window.
  • Students. Greater Boston has a large number of colleges, including Harvard, MIT, Boston University, Northeastern and UMass, and late August and May move-in and move-out bring students shipping a car to or from out of state. September 1 is also a traditional lease-turnover day in parts of Boston, so expect the streets to be crowded.
  • Military and federal moves. Hanscom Air Force Base, the Natick Soldier Systems Center, Westover Air Reserve Base and Joint Base Cape Cod bring moves in and out through the year. Ask your carrier how gate access will work and consider meeting the driver outside the gate.
  • Imported cars. Rhode Island’s Port of Davisville, next door to southeastern Massachusetts, is one of the busiest auto-import ports in the country, and trade press reports that it handled 238,146 finished vehicles in 2025, so dealer transfers and imported cars move through the region all year. Each terminal has its own release rules.
  • Cape Cod and the islands. Summer traffic on the Bourne and Sagamore bridges can slow a pickup or delivery on the Cape. Cars for Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket cross by ferry, which a car carrier cannot do, so ask your carrier to meet you at a mainland ferry terminal such as Woods Hole or Hyannis.
  • Winter weather. Nor’easters and snow emergencies, including parking bans in Boston and other cities, can slow pickups, especially in the Berkshires and western Massachusetts, so keep your pickup window flexible.

A flexible pickup window of a few days usually gets a faster carrier match, and booking a few weeks ahead matters more in October and early November, when snowbirds leave at once.

Distance, transit time and the main corridors

Massachusetts’s traffic runs on a few roads:

  • I-90, the Massachusetts Turnpike, is the main east–west route, running from Boston through Worcester and Springfield to the Berkshires and New York State. I-95 and Route 128 loop around Boston, and I-93 runs north and south through the city and its tunnels.
  • I-495 is the outer beltway through Lowell, Marlborough and the western suburbs, I-290 links Worcester with Marlborough and I-90, and I-91 follows the Connecticut River from Springfield north to Vermont and south to Hartford.
  • Route 3 and Route 6 lead to the South Shore and Cape Cod, where the Sagamore and Bourne bridges are the only road links to the Cape, so summer weekends can back up.
  • Tight streets and tolls. Narrow streets in the North End, Beacon Hill and Cambridge and the triple-deckers of Worcester, Somerville and Lowell can be too tight for a full-size car carrier, so the driver may ask you to meet at a wider street or a parking lot. Remove your E-ZPass transponder before pickup.

Typical open-trailer transit is about 1 to 2 days for trips under 400 miles, 2 to 4 days for 500 to 800 miles, 3 to 6 days for 1,000 to 1,300 miles and 6 to 9 days coast to coast. Those are industry-typical ranges rather than guarantees, and the clock starts when a driver picks the car up, not when you book. A flexible pickup window of a few days usually gets a faster carrier match.

Moving to Massachusetts: registration, inspection, excise tax and insurance

If you are moving to Massachusetts, the car arrives before the paperwork starts. These are the rules we found on Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) and Department of Revenue pages and in insurance guides, as search excerpts, so confirm each item with the RMV before you go:

  • Register promptly. The sources we found disagree about the deadline for new residents, with some guides saying 7 days and others 30, so check the RMV page and plan around the stricter number.
  • Insurance first. To transfer your registration and title from out of state, the RMV page says you visit with a completed Registration and Title Application and proof of Massachusetts insurance, and guides say your insurer files the registration form electronically, so insurance has to be in place before you go.
  • Title. The RMV says the Massachusetts certificate of title is processed and mailed in about 6 to 8 weeks.
  • Inspection. The RMV says you must obtain a vehicle inspection sticker within 7 days of the registration date, and guides say Massachusetts requires an annual inspection at a licensed station.
  • Excise tax. The Massachusetts guide to the motor vehicle excise says the rate is $25 per $1,000 of the vehicle’s value, charged for the calendar year and billed by the city or town where the car is garaged, not by the RMV. The value is based on the manufacturer’s list price and the age of the car.
  • Insurance limits. Insurance reports say the minimums for policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2025 are $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury and $30,000 for property damage, with $8,000 of personal injury protection and matching uninsured motorist coverage, but several guides still show the older limits, so confirm the current figures with the Massachusetts Division of Insurance or your insurer.

Rules and fees change, so confirm each item with the RMV before you go.

Boston, Worcester, Springfield, the Cape and the Berkshires

  • Boston and Greater Boston. Boston, Cambridge, Quincy, the North Shore and the I-95 and I-93 suburbs are the largest source of Massachusetts car shipping, with tight city streets and a lot of student and professional moves.
  • Worcester and central Massachusetts. Worcester, Framingham and Marlborough sit on I-90 and I-290 about an hour west of Boston, with lower-cost lanes toward Hartford and New York.
  • Springfield and western Massachusetts. Springfield, Holyoke, Northampton and the Pioneer Valley sit on I-91 and I-90 and price against the Hartford and New York lanes.
  • The Berkshires. Pittsfield and the hill towns on the New York line have fewer carriers on the smaller roads and slower winter pickups.
  • Cape Cod and the South Coast. Plymouth, Fall River, New Bedford and the Cape are reached by Route 3, Route 24 and I-195, and the Cape bridges can back up in summer.
  • The North Shore and the Merrimack Valley. Lowell, Lawrence, Lynn, Salem and Gloucester are covered by I-93, I-495 and Route 128.
  • Relocations and second cars. Massachusetts moves people to and from New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and Florida, and many movers ship a second car instead of driving two.

Dealerships, auctions and the port in Massachusetts

Dealers and auction yards are some of the most common pickup and delivery points for car carriers, and they are commercial addresses where a full-size trailer can usually reach. There is no single official ranking of Massachusetts dealerships, so these are examples drawn from company listings rather than a top-ten list.

Auction yards

  • North Billerica — a Copart North Boston yard in North Billerica appears on a recent bill of lading and in business directories.
  • Freetown — a civil engineering project page describes a large Copart regional site in Freetown, on the South Coast.
  • West Warren and North Dighton — trade press reported that Copart expanded its location in West Warren, and a Manheim New England yard in North Dighton appears on a recent bill of lading.
  • Lynn and Shirley — an IAA Boston yard in Shirley appears on a recent bill of lading, and directory listings also show an IAA address in Lynn.
  • Port terminals — imported cars and dealer transfers also move through coastal terminals, including Rhode Island’s nearby Port of Davisville, and each terminal has its own release rules, so confirm them before the driver arrives.

Copart and IAA sell salvage and damaged vehicles that often do not run, so price those as inoperable. Each yard has its own release and gate-pass rules, so confirm them before the driver arrives. Auction locations change and some directory entries are years old, so check each company’s own location finder. Dealers shipping cars to out-of-state buyers, and buyers having a car delivered to their Massachusetts home, are both common, and the same open, enclosed and inoperable pricing above applies.

How to choose a car shipping company in Massachusetts

Searches for auto transport Massachusetts and the best car shipping companies in Massachusetts find long lists of names, but there is no official ranking, and the right company is the one that is licensed, insured and clear about price. Check these before you book with anyone:

  • Look up the company’s federal registration. Every interstate auto transporter or broker needs a USDOT number and operating authority. You can check them on the FMCSA company snapshot and the FMCSA licensing and insurance search.
  • Know whether you are dealing with a broker or a carrier. A carrier owns the trucks. A broker or marketplace like Transportli matches your car with a vetted carrier on your lane and shows you the price up front.
  • Ask what the quote includes. Our quotes are for one vehicle on an open trailer, and inoperable and enclosed are priced as adjustments, as shown above. Be wary of a price far below the others, because it may not find a driver.
  • Understand the pickup window. Carriers give a window, not an exact time, and a flexible window of a few days usually gets a faster match.
  • Document the car. The bill of lading is the condition report, so take dated photos at pickup and delivery and note any damage before you sign.

Preparing your car for pickup

  1. Wash the car and photograph it from every side, inside and out, with the date on.
  2. Leave about a quarter tank of fuel and check for leaks, since carriers may refuse a car that leaks fluid.
  3. Remove personal items and toll tags. Carriers generally do not insure belongings left in the car, and the E-ZPass tag should come off before the tunnels and toll gantries.
  4. Fold or secure mirrors, antennas and racks and tell the carrier about anything unusual: a lowered car, a lift kit, a roof rack or a car that does not run.
  5. Plan the handoff. A large truck cannot always reach a narrow city street, so be ready to meet the driver at a nearby lot, and make sure someone can inspect and sign the bill of lading at both ends.

How much extra does it cost to ship an inoperable car?

On our platform an inoperable vehicle adds about 25% to the open-trailer price (a median of about $190 for a sedan in our tests), because the driver needs a winch and extra loading time. Tell us the car does not run when you request the quote.

Enclosed transport adds about 75% over the open-trailer price on our platform. For example, a sedan quoted at $1,360 open from Boston to Dallas works out to about $2,380 enclosed. Collector and high-value cars are usually shipped enclosed.

Can I ship my car to Florida for the winter from Massachusetts?

Yes, and it is the most-searched Massachusetts route. Fall demand for Florida runs from about October through mid-November according to one carrier guide, which suggests booking four to six weeks ahead. Use the Orlando and Miami quotes above as a guide, and compare a live quote for your dates.

Can a truck deliver to Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket?

A car carrier can usually reach the Cape by road over the Sagamore or Bourne bridges, though summer weekends can slow a delivery and narrow streets may be too tight for a full-size trailer. Cars for Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket cross by ferry, so ask the carrier to meet you at a mainland ferry terminal.

Can I ship a car to or from a military base in Massachusetts?

Yes. Carriers deliver to the area around Hanscom Air Force Base, the Natick Soldier Systems Center, Westover Air Reserve Base and Joint Base Cape Cod, but gate access varies, so ask the carrier how it works and consider meeting the driver outside the gate.

How soon do I have to register my car in Massachusetts after moving?

The sources we found disagree, with some guides saying 7 days and others 30 for new residents, so check the Massachusetts RMV page and plan around the stricter number. You need proof of Massachusetts insurance to register, and the RMV says the title is mailed in about 6 to 8 weeks.

Does my car need an inspection in Massachusetts?

Yes. The RMV says you must obtain a vehicle inspection sticker within 7 days of the registration date, and guides say Massachusetts requires an annual inspection at a licensed station. Check the current rules with the RMV.

How much is the Massachusetts car excise tax?

The Massachusetts guide to the motor vehicle excise says the rate is $25 per $1,000 of the vehicle’s value, charged for the calendar year and billed by the city or town where the car is garaged, not by the RMV.

What insurance does Massachusetts require?

Insurance reports say the minimums for policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2025 are $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury and $30,000 for property damage, with $8,000 of personal injury protection and matching uninsured motorist coverage. Some guides still show older figures, so confirm with the Massachusetts Division of Insurance or your insurer.

Can I ship a car to or from a Massachusetts auction?

Yes. Carriers pick up and deliver at auction yards, such as the Copart yards listed in North Billerica and Freetown and the IAA locations listed in Lynn and Shirley, though each yard has its own release and gate-pass rules. Cars that do not run should be priced as inoperable.

How long did recent Massachusetts car shipments take?

In ten recent jobs that started in Massachusetts, a Silverado utility truck to Rowley (about 80 miles) was delivered the same day, a GMC Yukon to Pennsylvania (about 300) took 1 day, a Ram ProMaster within Massachusetts, a Honda CR-V to Wisconsin, a Honda Civic to Tampa and an Audi Q3 to Texas (about 50 to 1,800 miles) took 2, a Mitsubishi Lancer to Sarasota and an F-150 to Mississippi (about 1,400 to 1,450) took 4, a Buick Riviera to Tucson (about 2,700) took 5 and a Mazda CX-30 to Colorado (about 2,050) took 6. Dates are the signature dates on the bills of lading and miles are our approximations.

Can I ship a damaged, inoperable or classic car from Massachusetts?

Yes. One of our ten recent jobs was a Ram ProMaster with visible crash damage that went from the IAA yard in Shirley to Brockton in 2 days, and another was a 1991 Buick Riviera that went to Tucson in 5. A car that does not run adds about 25% on our platform, and classics are often shipped enclosed, which adds about 75%, so say so when you request the quote. Our classic car guide covers the details.
