Looking for auto transport in Idaho? What car shipping in Idaho costs depends on the route, the vehicle and whether it runs. We ran real quotes from our platform for thirty-two Idaho lanes, from a 34-mile hop between Spokane and Coeur d’Alene to a 1,701-mile haul between Dallas and Boise, and an open-trailer sedan ranged from $138 to $1,760. Here is what Idaho auto transport costs by vehicle type and route, including auto transport in Boise and car shipping out of Idaho Falls, how the price changes with direction, how long five recent real jobs took, what inoperable and enclosed shipping add, and what to do about Idaho registration and the VIN inspection after your car arrives.

Whether you need an auto transport service in Idaho for a move, a purchase or a dealer transfer, every figure below is a real quote from our platform for one vehicle on an open trailer, running, priced separately for each vehicle type on October 18, 2026. Boise stands in for the Treasure Valley, with Idaho Falls, Twin Falls and Coeur d’Alene covering eastern, southern and northern Idaho, and each lane is labeled by its actual cities. Most moves are quoted in both directions, so you can see what changes when the car is arriving in Idaho or leaving it.

Distances are the road miles in each quote, and prices are in dollars. The price per mile falls fast as the trip gets longer, from $2.77 a mile on Boise → Twin Falls to $0.75 on Dallas → Boise. Pickups cost a median of 36% more than a sedan on these lanes and vans a median of 20% more, while an SUV was priced below the sedan on 9 of 32 lanes. Treat these as a guide, and get a live quote for your exact pickup and delivery points. The two Coeur d’Alene–Spokane quotes (about 35 miles) came back with low confidence ratings, so we left them out of the per-mile figures, and the Boise–Twin Falls and Idaho Falls quotes were rated moderate.

How the price per mile changes with distance

Distance is the biggest driver, but the price per mile falls as the trip gets longer. For a sedan it ran $1.03–$2.77 per mile under 450 miles and $0.75–$1.04 per mile at 1,000 miles or more. A short run costs more per mile because the driver still has to load, unload and reposition the truck whether the trip is 128 miles or 1,000. Boise to Twin Falls is 128 miles and cost $354, or $2.77 a mile, while Dallas to Boise is about 13 times as far but only 4 times the price.

Pickups and vans cost more than sedans

A pickup cost a median of 36% more than a sedan on the same lane, from 10% less to 124% more, and a van a median of 20% more. An SUV cost a median of 5% more than the sedan and was cheaper on 9 of 32. If you are shipping a pickup, check the pickup column for your route, and dually trucks, lifted vehicles and anything oversized need a quote of their own.

Popular Idaho car shipping routes

Boise to Salt Lake City, Portland and the Northwest

Boise sits between Salt Lake City and the Pacific Northwest, which makes those the short and medium trips. Salt Lake City: a sedan was $386 leaving Boise (341 mi) and $350 into Boise; Portland: a sedan was $450 leaving Boise (431 mi) and $484 into Boise; Seattle: a sedan was $490 leaving Boise (499 mi) and $542 into Boise; Spokane: a sedan was $444 leaving Boise (371 mi) and $464 into Boise; Tacoma: a sedan was $476 leaving Boise (513 mi) and $501 into Boise.

Boise to Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Phoenix

The Southwest is the main route for people moving between Idaho and Nevada, California and Arizona. Las Vegas: a sedan was $730 leaving Boise (622 mi) and $700 into Boise; Los Angeles: a sedan was $631 leaving Boise (843 mi) and $938 into Boise; Phoenix: a sedan was $999 leaving Boise (924 mi) and $1,019 into Boise.

Boise to Denver, Dallas, Chicago and Minneapolis

Idaho to the Mountain West, Texas and the Midwest is a long trip with a lower price per mile. Denver: a sedan was $833 leaving Boise (830 mi) and $823 into Boise; Dallas: a sedan was $1,354 leaving Boise (1,605 mi) and $1,271 into Boise; Chicago: a sedan was $1,362 leaving Boise (1,696 mi) and $1,760 into Boise; Minneapolis: a sedan was $1,140 leaving Boise (1,460 mi) and $1,228 into Boise.

Inside Idaho: Idaho Falls, Twin Falls and Coeur d’Alene

Idaho is long and narrow, and its regions face different directions. Eastern Idaho looks toward Salt Lake City, southern Idaho toward Boise and the Northwest, and the Panhandle toward Spokane, so the right lane depends on where in the state you live. A sedan: Boise to Idaho Falls was $520 (281 mi); Idaho Falls to Boise was $515 (281 mi); Boise to Twin Falls was $354 (128 mi); Twin Falls to Boise was $352 (129 mi); Idaho Falls to Salt Lake City was $472 (216 mi); Salt Lake City to Idaho Falls was $417 (214 mi); Coeur d’Alene to Spokane was $138 (36 mi); Spokane to Coeur d’Alene was $143 (34 mi).

A sedan arriving in Boise cost more than the same trip leaving on 8 of the 14 Boise corridors: Los Angeles to Boise 49% higher ($938 vs. $631), Chicago to Boise 29% higher ($1,760 vs. $1,362), Seattle to Boise 11% higher ($542 vs. $490), Minneapolis to Boise 8% higher ($1,228 vs. $1,140). Leaving Boise cost more on 6: Boise to Salt Lake City 10% higher ($386 vs. $350), Boise to Dallas 7% higher ($1,354 vs. $1,271), Boise to Las Vegas 4% higher ($730 vs. $700). The price follows how many cars are moving each way on that lane, so if you can ship in either direction, or can drive one way and ship the other, check both.

Real Idaho jobs: how long they took

These are five recent jobs that started in Idaho, taken from the signed bills of lading and the pickup and delivery photos the drivers filed. They range from a 2025 Miata and a 2018 RAM 1500 pickup to a Dodge Challenger, a new Chevrolet Tahoe and a 1942 Harley-Davidson military motorcycle with a sidecar. Customer names, street addresses, VINs, plates and carrier details are left out, and the photos are blurred where needed. Motorcycles and sidecar rigs like the Harley are priced separately from cars, so ask for a motorcycle quote.

Inoperable and enclosed vehicles: what they add

On our platform an inoperable vehicle adds about $100 to the open-trailer price, because the driver needs a winch and extra loading time, and enclosed transport adds about 75%, because enclosed trailers carry fewer cars. For example, a sedan quoted at $833 open from Boise to Denver works out to about $1,458 enclosed, or $1,558 if it also does not run. Collector cars, motorcycles and high-value vehicles are usually shipped enclosed, which many Idaho owners choose for the winter roads and gravel. Our classic car transport guide covers enclosed shipping in detail.

Students, soldiers, new residents, winter and when to ship

A few patterns recur in Idaho car shipping. These are general industry experience and Idaho’s own calendar, not our October quote data, so compare a live quote for your date:

  • Students. Late August move-in and May move-out matter at Boise State, the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho State in Pocatello and BYU-Idaho in Rexburg, and many students ship a car to or from out of state. Fall 2025 headcounts reported by the schools were about 28,500 at Boise State, 13,900 at Idaho State and 12,400 at the University of Idaho, and BYU-Idaho said enrollment reached 25,000 in 2025 including concurrent enrollment.
  • Military moves. Mountain Home Air Force Base, southeast of Boise, brings moves in and out through the year, with peaks in summer. Ask your carrier how gate access will work and consider meeting the driver outside the gate.
  • New residents. Idaho’s cities, especially the Treasure Valley around Boise, Meridian and Nampa, attract people relocating from California, Washington, Oregon and other states, and many ship a second car instead of driving two.
  • Work and projects. Employers in the Boise area, the Idaho National Laboratory near Idaho Falls and seasonal work in the mountains and farm country bring relocations in and out. We do not have Idaho-specific timing data for any of it, so book early for the peaks.
  • Winter weather. Snow and ice can slow I-84, I-86, I-15 and the mountain passes from November through March, and carriers may hold cars until roads clear. Keep your pickup window flexible for winter moves, and expect more delays for rural and mountain addresses.

A flexible pickup window of a few days usually gets a faster carrier match, and booking a few days ahead matters more around late August, when students and new hires move at once.

Distance, transit time and the main corridors

Idaho’s traffic runs on a few highways:

  • I-84 is the main route across southern Idaho, running from the Oregon border through the Treasure Valley (Boise, Meridian, Nampa) and Twin Falls to Burley, then south toward Salt Lake City. I-86 and I-15 link Pocatello, American Falls and Idaho Falls with Utah and Montana.
  • I-90 crosses the Panhandle through Coeur d’Alene toward Spokane and Montana, and US-95 is the long road north–south through western Idaho. Boise and the Panhandle are separated by hours of mountain driving, so northern Idaho cars are usually priced from Spokane.
  • Three regions. Eastern Idaho (Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Rexburg) looks toward Salt Lake City, southern Idaho (Boise, Twin Falls) toward the Northwest and Utah, and the Panhandle toward Spokane. The right lane depends on where in the state you live.
  • Rural addresses. Much of Idaho is rural, and a full-size car carrier cannot always reach a ranch road or mountain driveway, so the driver may ask you to meet at a nearby town or lot.

Typical open-trailer transit is about 1 to 2 days for trips under 400 miles, 2 to 4 days for 500 to 800 miles, 3 to 6 days for 1,000 to 1,300 miles and 6 to 9 days coast to coast. Those are industry-typical ranges rather than guarantees, and the clock starts when a driver picks the car up, not when you book. A flexible pickup window of a few days usually gets a faster carrier match.

Moving to Idaho: registration, VIN inspection and insurance

If you are moving to Idaho, the car arrives before the paperwork starts. These are the rules published by the Idaho Transportation Department and Idaho county offices for vehicles brought in from another state, as found in search excerpts, so confirm each item with your county assessor before you go:

  • Title and register within 30 days. ITD’s New to Idaho page says an out-of-state vehicle must be titled and registered within 30 days of moving to Idaho. Some county and third-party pages say 90 days, so treat 30 days as the safe target and confirm with your county.
  • Registration is handled by your county. Idaho titles and registrations run through the 44 county assessor offices, not a state-run DMV, so find your county’s motor vehicle office and ask whether you need an appointment.
  • Get a VIN inspection first. A vehicle registering in Idaho for the first time from another state needs a VIN inspection. Ada County says it is done at the county motor vehicle office, and other counties say a sheriff’s deputy can do it.
  • Bring the documents. Expect to bring the current out-of-state title and registration, your photo ID or Idaho driver’s license, a Social Security or license number and proof of Idaho insurance. If the car is financed, the lienholder has to release the title.
  • Insurance minimums. Idaho’s minimum liability limits are $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury and $15,000 for property damage. Sources disagree on how uninsured motorist coverage works, so ask your insurer.
  • Emissions. Treasure Valley emissions testing was ordered to end in Canyon County and Kuna in 2023, and the Ada County end date depended on further steps, so confirm the current status with the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality before you go.

Rules and fees change, so confirm each item before you go: Idaho Transportation Department: New to Idaho and Ada County: motor vehicle registration.

Boise, the campuses and the bases

  • The Treasure Valley. Boise, Meridian, Nampa and Eagle make up Idaho’s largest metro, and most of the state’s dealer, logistics and relocation traffic sits there.
  • Universities. Fall 2025 headcounts reported by the schools were about 28,500 at Boise State, 13,900 at Idaho State and 12,400 at the University of Idaho, with BYU-Idaho at about 25,000 including concurrent students.
  • Military. Mountain Home Air Force Base brings moves in and out each year.
  • Seasonal moves. Some owners split the year between Idaho and a warmer state such as Arizona, Nevada or California and ship a car each way. We do not have Idaho-specific timing data for it, so check a live quote for your dates.
  • Relocations and second cars. Idaho moves people to and from California, Washington, Oregon, Utah and Texas, and many movers ship a second car instead of driving two.

Dealerships and auctions in Idaho

Dealers and auction yards are some of the most common pickup and delivery points for car carriers, and they are commercial addresses where a full-size trailer can usually reach. There is no single official ranking of Idaho dealerships, so these are examples drawn from published directories rather than a top-ten list.

Auction yards

  • Boise area — directories list a Copart yard on North Middleton Road, listed under Nampa or Boise, with weekly sales on Thursdays. Idaho’s Copart inventory was served by this single yard in the listing we found.
  • Elsewhere — we did not confirm an IAA or Manheim location in Idaho, and some dealer and salvage sales for the state go through yards in Utah, Washington and Oregon.

Copart sells salvage and damaged vehicles that often do not run, so price those as inoperable. Each yard has its own release and gate-pass rules, so confirm them before the driver arrives. Auction locations change and some directory entries are years old, so check the company’s own location finder. Dealers shipping cars to out-of-state buyers, and buyers having a car delivered to their Idaho home, are both common, and the same open, enclosed and inoperable pricing above applies.

How to choose a car shipping company in Idaho

Searches for auto transport Idaho and the best car shipping companies in Boise find long lists of names, including a number of Idaho-based haulers, but there is no official ranking, and the right company is the one that is licensed, insured and clear about price. Check these before you book with anyone:

  • Look up the company’s federal registration. Every interstate auto transporter or broker needs a USDOT number and operating authority. You can check them on the FMCSA company snapshot and the FMCSA licensing and insurance search.
  • Know whether you are dealing with a broker or a carrier. A carrier owns the trucks. A broker or marketplace like Transportli matches your car with a vetted carrier on your lane and shows you the price up front.
  • Ask what the quote includes. Our quotes are for one vehicle on an open trailer, and inoperable and enclosed are priced as adjustments, as shown above. Be wary of a price far below the others, because it may not find a driver.
  • Understand the pickup window. Carriers give a window, not an exact time, and a flexible window of a few days usually gets a faster match.
  • Document the car. The bill of lading is the condition report, so take dated photos at pickup and delivery and note any damage before you sign.

Preparing your car for pickup

  1. Wash the car and photograph it from every side, inside and out, with the date on.
  2. Leave about a quarter tank of fuel and check for leaks, since carriers may refuse a car that leaks fluid.
  3. Remove personal items and toll tags. Carriers generally do not insure belongings left in the car.
  4. Fold or secure mirrors, antennas and racks and tell the carrier about anything unusual: a lowered car, a lift kit, a ski rack or a car that does not run.
  5. Plan the handoff. A large truck cannot always reach a rural road or a narrow street, so be ready to meet the driver at a nearby lot, and make sure someone can inspect and sign the bill of lading at both ends.
